Daniel Jackson stands silhouetted on a ridge watching the sun set wearing desert robes. Teal'c stands in the foreground, watching him, wearing Jaffa armor. A large planet hangs overhead.

Summary:
Daniel and Teal'c crash on a planet with no Stargate, and no way of surviving without depending on the Goa'uld-worshipping locals.

Author's Notes: much grumbling about languages, names, and history )
beatrice_otter: Sam and Teal'c (Sam and Teal'c)
  • It's like 11k words (now, but it's not finished),
  • it's Teal'c-and-Daniel focused stranded-fic,
  • it has two possible endings and I'm not sure which to go by,
  • the thematic/stylistic stuff I'm trying to put in to get it to match the tone of the artwork is NOT WORKING,
  • it's due on the 30th (though it won't be revealed until a week later so if I can bang out a finished draft, post it on the 30th, I should have time to actually whip it into shape by the time it's revealed.)

This is a wonderful story. I love the different take on revealing the SGC to the world, and I love Teal'c's perspective on his duty and his parenting fails, and I love how complicated and nuanced you made Cassandra in so few words. I would love to see Teal'c and Lauren on Kelowna with Jonas, if you ever write more.f

So, today I signed up for [community profile] remixduello against my better judgment.  (The remixee chooses which story is remixed.)  But I had to redo my signup, because it said that Teal'c/Drey'auc isn't a canon posting.

?!?

I know it's rare; I have the only two stories with that pairing on AO3.  But it's certainly canon.  (I have sent them a note.)

I love Teal'c, and wish there was more fic about him.  My favorite Teal'c pairing is the one above: late-season Sam/Teal'c

beatrice_otter: Men may move mountains, but ideas move men. (Ideas move men)
So, if you're in the Stargate fandom you've probably heard about the massive amounts of fail (multiple different kinds, no less!) inherent in the casting sides for an episode of Stargate: Universe, and the defense from Gateworld, and all that. [livejournal.comt profile] sheafrotherdon has an excellent rebuttal to Gateworld's defense of the fail, and [livejournal.com profile] cereta has an older post on living in a systematically misogynistic society and why don't "nice" men take a stand which then links to [livejournal.com profile] khalinche's post on the levels of harassment your average woman experiences on a daily basis, and why men don't really get it. And someone in the comments mentioned the Vagina Monologues, which I've never seen.

And I've been thinking. I love Stargate, but not the fail, and it seems like the fail has been growing over time, and the way they consistently play issues of rape and torture and such for titilation/humor or in other ways abuse white male privilege.

And lo, at 2 o'clock in the morning, an idea has formed for a story I will never write but which would be Made of Awesome if someone else would do it:

Teal'c is sensitive to power issues as they relate to the whole Jaffa/slave thing, but not so much (which is to say, not at all) as they relate to male/female relationships. He's very secure in his male privilege, and uses it, particularly with Jaffa women. He has great respect for Sam, treats her like an equal as a warrior, true, but look at how he treated the Jaffa women he was with. It's not that he's a bad guy, he just responds as his culture has taught him and doesn't really seem to think about the issue that much. And then in the episode Family Ties, Teal'c gets given tickets to The Vagina Monologues.

I want to know what Teal'c's reaction was. I want it to be done seriously, not played for laughs. I want to know how he related that to his experiences of Jaffa life and working with Sam for ten years. I want to explore Jaffa culture and Teal'c's perspective on it beyond the 'Jaffa revenge thing.' I want to see him talk about it with Sam, and with Ishta, and maybe his daughter-in-law Kar'yn. I don't want him to turn into an enlightened feminist Western male, but I do want him to understand.

Actually, I think I may be able to get it done tonight, which would mean that I might have time for a really quick beta before it needs to get posted. (Due May 1st!) If anyone could do it on such short notice (it'll probably be only 4k words or so), please let me know!

Now that authors have been revealed, I can post my remix here!  And the ironic thing?  The author I was assigned to this year is the one who wrote the beautiful Control (Atonal Cadenza Remix) for me last year.  What goes around, comes around, I guess.

beatrice_otter: SG-1 in the Gateroom (SG-1)
I haven't been participating in Gateworld's forums for a year because a) I got busy with rl and b) there can be an awful lot of fanwankery in some parts of it (particularly the shipper and anti-shipper threads). But I wandered on the other day, and stumbled across a post where someone was wondering why Teal'c only has the one kid, considering how old he is. And, of course, it got me thinking about Jaffa society, madly filling in the blanks of what we know (see below). And now I want to read some good stories about Jaffa culture, of which there are all too few. I won't be writing one any time soon, because I've got culture/background but no plot, but if anyone wants to point me in the direction of some good fic (or use the musings below to write some), I'd appreciate it.

I just realized that I didn't post a link to the story that got written for me in the [livejournal.com profile] gateverse_remix, which is a huge oversight because it's a great story. And it's a remix of my single favorite story of mine, to boot.

None But Ourselves (the Redemption Song remix) (PG, gen)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] cofax7
Original Author: [livejournal.com profile] beatrice_otter
Original Story: Pale Battalions
Summary: It is unclear to this writer how such a fierce and deadly battle, and one so clearly successful, could have had aught to do with the great Jaffa Rebellion more than thirty years later. 2,800 words.

Go, read now! And review.

Post a list of your top five fics favorite you've written, regardless of fandom or the reason you love them. This isn't about the BEST things you've written, but what you LOVE most. Then tag five other people to do the same.

This is hard, because my "favorite" tends to be whatever I'm working on atm. But I'll give it a shot.

My favorite fics:

Caro's Choice. Well, the first one isn't a fanfic, it's an original short story about a teenage girl living on Mars. It's not a Mary Sue, but it comes closer than anything else I've written, I think; it's also closer to early SF shorts than anything I've ever written. Since I'm fairly sure it's not online anywhere, here it is )

Adrift. To fly a Wraith hive ship, you must be a Wraith. I love it because it's one of those stories that feels more like I was a conduit for it than that I wrote it.

Pale Battalions. Teal'c goes home after a glorious battle in Apophis' name. Because pre-series Teal'c doesn't get enough love.

The rest of my favorites are all currently WIPs, which means they're not posted anywhere, but if I had to choose favorites of the ones that are posted online, here's how it would go.

Family Relationships. When Carter visits her father, she finds they both have surprises. Season 8. Because I love the Tok'ra and there isn't enough good Tok'ra fic out there, and it's the first part in a series, the third part of which I have an intense love/hate relationship with, and have had since November of 2004.

What She Wants. Because Faith is Fun.

I'm gonna copy [livejournal.com profile] kellifer_fic shamefully, and take the easy way out by just tagging all of you.
beatrice_otter: Sam and Teal'c (Sam and Teal'c)
For [livejournal.com profile] katie_m. Knowing you'd been waiting for a long time, I tried to get it written as quickly as possible without sacrificing quality. Many thanks go to [livejournal.com profile] drkcherry for the quick beta on very short notice.

Prompt:
Three things you WANT in your story: Pre-series Teal'c, music, mud.
Three things you DO NOT WANT in your story: Explicit sex, um... you know, that's pretty much it.
