beatrice_otter: Poirot: Little Grey Cells (Little Grey Cells)

This is a very long letter with lots of stuff, but DO NOT PANIC. I'm actually fairly easy to please; I am very rarely disappointed with a ficathon story. I write long and detailed Dear Author letters because I find such things helpful when I'm writing for other people; if you are like me, here you go! If your style is different and a detailed letter makes you feel hemmed-in, feel free to do what works for you.

The most important thing for me in a fic is that the characters are well-written and recognizably themselves. Even when I don't like a character, I don't go in for character-bashing. If nothing else, if the rest of this letter is too much or my kinks just don't fit yours, just concentrate on writing a good story with everyone in character and good spelling and grammar and I will almost certainly love what you come up with.

One thing: I do have an embarrassment squick, which makes humor kind of hit-or-miss sometimes. The kind of humor where someone does something embarrassing and the audience is laughing at them makes me uncomfortable because I identify too much with the person getting laughed at, so instead of being funny it is squicky. On the other hand, the kind of humor where the audience is laughing with the characters I really enjoy.

If you’re sending yourself out to the edge of civilization, people expect it to be done for fame and glory – but then, Julian Bashir has never been what’s expected of him. He’s quite happy to agree with the reasons other people provide, because he isn’t sharing the private whys and wherefores when people are more than happy to fill in the gaps themselves. There are other, better things to worry about, work to be done and friends to be made – possibly even a lover, if he’s lucky…

...all while fighting to maintain his worth, and remain exactly who he’s always been.
This is an awesome story, taking an AU premise (what if Julian’s parents had been caught before they could have him genetically altered?) and exploring it.  I love the characterizations, I love how three-dimensional everyone seems.  But if you might be triggered by parents “treating” their child to make them “normal,” you might be bothered by this fic–we never even meet them, but it deals with what they tried to do to him.

[personal profile] endeni wanted to know about my favorite Star Trek series/movie/character/plot arc

Which, er, is quite a problem because there is SO MUCH GOOD STUFF.  I mean, Star Trek will never be my favorite show (B5 beats it hands down), but I still love Star Trek--all of it, even the parts I don't like.

Something about everything Star Trek )

[personal profile] melannen thinned out her library by giving away books, and a whole box of them just arrived for me.  Yay!  I said I'd pay for postage--paypal, check, what?

Mostly Star Trek novels and a few comic books--things the town library had growing up that I don't have copies of.

Remix Recs

beatrice_otter: DS9 wormhole (DS9)
The main Remix just went live, and here are some recs.

First off, the story written for me is awesome, you should all read it.  What You Know (The Devil in the Details Remix) is a Deep Space 9 story about the whole Sisko family dealing with the knowledge of what the Prophets did to ensure that Benjamin Sisko was born.  A very haunting look at the things the show didn't consider which takes my story and amps it to the next level.

One Who Lights the Darkness (The Bedtime Story Remix) When you're the slayer, what do you do when there's a monster under your bed?  Remix of 5 Scoobies Who Didn't Curse The Darkness And On Who Lit A Candle.  I love the different reactions to monsters and beds. On its own, it is a great remix. It's also a great remix concept, taking the whole Scoobies-at-night idea and giving it a twist.

The Captain and the Man of Iron, a Saga by Thor Odinsson, beta by Loki Laufeyjarson (Steve Rogers Must Die: the In Tony Stark’s Arms Mix) The title says it all.

Buffy/Doctor Who
Watching the Watchers (the Oncoming Storm Remix) Ethan Rayne and the 9th Doctor.  A storm, a Doctor, and a judicious application of chaos.

Harry Potter
About Her (Candlelight Mix) .  Luna had always taken a shine to fantastic things, and Cho definitely counts as one of the most fantastic.  I love the way the author writes an adult Luna, it's just pitch-perfect.

Stargate SG-1
The First Rule of Anthropology (The Missed Chances Remix).  Nine years after Daniel leaves the SGC, the Stargate goes public.

Star Trek
Second Star to the Right (The Chartered Remix) Spock was drowning and Nyota didn't know how to save him.

X-Men movieverse
Homeschooling for Mutants (a Midnight's Child Remix).  Magneto sets Pyro a reading assignment. Unlike past literature assignments, it turns out to be relevant to his interests.  I love the way the author shows us the power of literature, and why all these people are doing what they do.

beatrice_otter: Garak--Rarely pure and never simple (Garak)
When you're 13k words in to an approximately 20k-word story, it's awesome to finally figure out what the story's about.  \o/  Now I just have to go back and edit the rest into shape when I'm done.  I hope that with the editing it will stay above the 20k-minimum word count for [ profile] oc_bigbang; I've never done a Big Bang before, and have never had custom art done for one of my stories, and I'm really looking forward to it.  (I did [ profile] trekreversebang last year for some awesome art, but the artist disappeared and the art was never finished, and the mods said I couldn't post the rough draft with the story.  Which was a shame, because it was some great art.)  Anyway, at this point it's looking like the rough draft will come out at only just slightly over 20k.  (The bb limit is 15k words plus any you had before you signed up; I'm using an existing WIP that had about 5k words when I started, which means I need a minimum of 20k words.)

I'm already thinking about the beta I'm going to need.  The story is about a Bajoran Starfleet officer, post-DS9, and the story has turned out to be about surviving the scars of the Occupation and rebuilding while dealing with the legacy of colonialism (from the Cardassians) and current unthinking privilege (from the Federation) and terrorism.  As an educated middle-class American white woman, I'm thinking I'll need beta services from someone with a bit more personal experience in post-colonial life.

Here is my current WIP list:

[ profile] xover_exchange fic.  (And once it's done, I'll probably have Yuletide to start.)

Desert Between sequel, set several years later focusing on Spock's Vulcan wife.  And what she thinks of the whole situation.  (I'm still not sure this is what would happen, if this is the choice Uhura would make; but [personal profile] laurajv wanted to know what would happen if it did, and upon reflection I realized so did I.)

DS9 original character fic that's been on the backburner for some time but is slowly moving up my priority list.  It began out of my fascination with Vulcans, and my love of Bajor and DS9, and my realization that it was highly unrealistic that the only non-Vulcans we see marry Vulcans are Humans, and there's a whole Federation out there.  So I set out to write a Vulcan/Bajoran love story.  Which then got bogged down.  I have since realized that it is not, in fact, a love story.  It is a gen friendship story, about growing and learning and respecting culture despite differences, and about being in transition.  It's one of those where I'm not sure it will ever be finished, but I like it and so keep going back and fiddling with it.

Batman Beyond--Terry and guns.  A short meditation on guns and the way people react to them that [personal profile] hradzka rightly pointed out needed an actual, you know, plot to go with the philosophy.  I will get back to it some day.

Superman Movieverse/DC fic to the same plot bunny that spurred [ profile] ljs_lj to write Biopsychology (and are you ever going to get around to writing that new sequel to it?)  My version is quite different, as the plot would focus on/be triggered by Kara Zor-El (Supergirl) arriving on Earth.  It's mostly about her and her issues and what she thinks of Earth and her cousin (and, eventually, his screwed-up love life, which is where the plot bunny comes in).  Since I finished my Richard-focused post-Superman Returns fic "A Family Story," I've had very little motivation to get back to this one, so it's staying on the back burner for now.  Maybe next year.  (I do intend to eventually get back to it.)

BSG AU called Jumping Time (and this may be the only time in my life I've ever been able to come up with a title before I had to post the fic).  Of all my WIPs, the least likely to get finished because while I have quite a number of scenes for it running around my head, I have no plot to tie them together with.  Basically, at the end of the series when Kara jumps the Galactica, instead of finding a new Earth they find themselves back in time about 6 months before the Cylon attack, and decide that the best way to save the Colonies is for the Rebel Cylons and the Final Five to infiltrate the Cylons and stage a coup against the Ones

I have several other plot bunnies, but those are the ones that not only have files, they have files pinned to my start bar so I can access them easily and they will stay in my head.
