[community profile] crossworks is over for the year, so I can reveal what I wrote! I wrote an Agent Carter/Miss Fisher crossover called A Spy On The Golden State Train. I'd never actually watched Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries before getting this assignment; I'd seen the gifsets and posts on tumblr, but that was all. But I wasn't feeling inspired by what I was matched on, and there were a few episodes of Miss Fisher on Youtube, so I watched enough of that to get a feel for the characters and used the wiki to check the details, and here it is!

Title: A Spy on the Golden State Train
Author: [personal profile] beatrice_otter
Fandom: Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries/Agent Carter
Characters: Phryne Fisher, Dottie Underwood, Peggy Carter
Written For: [archiveofourown.org profile] veryrach  in Crossworks 2023
Rating: Gen
Length: 3978 words
Summary: Phrynne has a little bit of excitement on her first trip to America after the Second World War.

On AO3. On Squidgeworld. Rebloggable on tumblr. On Pillowfort. Rebloggable on Cohost.

Phryne's book was not as exciting as the cover had promised, but it was the best entertainment she had at the moment. Next time I want to cross America, I shall take an aeroplane, she promised herself. The views of the Rocky Mountains had been breathtaking, but the great plains were, well, plain. And endless. And alas, there were very few people on this train interesting enough to be worth watching on their second day together.

Well, they would be in Chicago soon enough, and the nightlife there would be worth the wait. After years of a war on Australia's own front doorstep, she was eager for a city that hadn't been directly touched by it. Phryne was wearing red and was eager to show the world it was well-earned. )

[community profile] crossworks is live, and the authors will be revealed tomorrow; I wrote one story and received not one but TWO great fics! Go read them all, there are a lot of great fics, but here are my recommendations.

Summary: Edwin and Ana love each other, and they're grateful to Mr. Stark. But there are still a lot of details to figure out in their new life.

The first--and only--time Edwin tried to dress Mr. Stark, it did not go well. )

Authors for [archiveofourown.org profile] SSR_Confidential_2017 have been revealed! I wrote A Purpose-Driven Life for [personal profile] sapphire2309. And, uh, in a STUNNING lack of connecting-the-dots, I didn't check before asking the only other person volunteering as a beta to beta for me. And did not notice that I HAD GOTTEN MY RECIPIENT TO BETA FOR ME until I was uploading my fic.

::facepalm::

Also, I am hovering really close to burnout, and so I don't think I should do any more ficathons for a while, much as I love them.  The last two, I wasn't able to actually get myself to write until the deadline was bearing down on me, and then I was in pure panic-mode and not really able to make good writing and editing decisions.  (Thank you to those who have held my hands through this.)  I don't need the extra stress.

Anyway! I like this fic, here it is.

Title: A Purpose-Driven Life
Author: beatrice_otter
Fandom: Agent Carter
Rating: PG
Characters: Dottie Underwood, Agnes Cully | Whitney Frost
Word Count: 6,194
Betaed by: [personal profile] sapphire2309
Written for: [personal profile] sapphire2309
Summary: Dottie escapes the Red Room as a child. Everything goes differently from there.

AN: ::hangs head in shame:: Why yes, yes I DID accidentally ask my recipient to beta for me without even realizing it until I went to post. I AM SO SORRY, SAPPHIRE2309! I swear I will never ask for a beta without double-checking who the recipient is!

AN2: Yes, I know, I have fiddled with the timeline. According to the show, Dottie Underwood was a pre-teen in 1937, while Whitney Frost was already an adult living in California and starting to work as a model/actress by 1934. I have made Dottie older and Whitney younger, to match.

AN3: I was not able to figure out the cost of a mob hit in the 1930s. However, I was able to find the cost of hiring a hitman in 2013 (https://priceonomics.com/how-much-does-a-hitman-cost/), and use a historical inflation calculator to figure out what that would have been in 1935 money.

AN4: in your letter, you said you love stone-cold-terrifying villain!Whitney, but you also ask for what would have happened if she'd gotten what she wanted (science) in the first place. And I think in that case, she wouldn't have needed to become stone-cold-terrifying villain.

[archiveofourown.org profile] SSR_Confidential_2017 is open for business!  There's a lot of great Agent Carter fic, and  nice variety of stories.  Lots of minor-character love, too.  You should check them all out!  Here are some of my favorites:

I received A Brief Period of Rejoicing.  With the war in Europe coming to an end Peggy Carter and the Howling Commandos get to have some well earned R&R with an old friend and some new ones.  It's a nice crossover with some minor comics characters, a little bit of action, lots of fun.

Tomorrow, in a year.  Inventions, the consequences they have and the choices you make: Three encounters Howard Stark has with German scientists he does and doesn't work with.  Interesting look at scientific ethics from different perspectives.

What's Next.  “I keep saying she’s going to get herself into trouble, trying to fix everything."  Violet, 1931-1944.  Interesting look at a character we only got brief interactions with in canon.  (She was Daniel's girlfriend in season 2)

Reclamation.  Jack gets himself in trouble. Again. Peggy and Daniel attempt to help him. Again. Things go exactly contrary to plan. Again.  Good casefic, wish it were longer.

A Purpose-Driven Life.  Dottie escapes the Red Room as a child. Everything goes differently from there.  Interesting AU idea with both Dottie and a young Agnes Cully (i.e., Whitney Frost)

Playing the Cards.  Jason ponders his life after Zero Matter.  Interesting idea of what the long-lasting effects of Zero Matter might be.

Girls' Night Out.  Peggy Carter, Rose Roberts, and Ana Jarvis walk into a bar . . .  What it says on the tin.

I'm working on my [community profile] ssrconfidential 2017 fic, and I could use a beta.  Well, right now I need some plot advice/brainstorming and in about a week I'll need a beta.

ETA: actually, I just finished it!  So, no brainstorming needed, but still need a beta.

beatrice_otter: Peggy Carter handcuffed to a table (Peggy Carter)
I had a GREAT idea for my [community profile] ssrconfidential fic.  But then I checked the timelines and there is no way to make it work.  And I have 700 words of it written already.

Ah, well.  I can do pieces of it, but it won't be as cool.  ::pouts::

beatrice_otter: Sam and Teal'c (Sam and Teal'c)
The story I was scrambling to get a beta for?  The deadline got extended!  For everyone!  Apparently, multiple people had contacted the mods saying they had a story mostly done but it wouldn't be done on time, and one of the mods was having computer trouble such that they can't get their FINISHED story off the hard-drive, and so they said, screw it, we're moving the deadline back a month.

On the one hand: Yes!  This story is one of those which I have occasionally, in which it is just going to go on for a while and even if I know where the ending is going to be (I do now, thanks to excellent betaing from [personal profile] tielan and [personal profile] princessofgeeks) it's not going to get there without many thousands of words in the middle.  Like, no, no shortcuts, either you write all this other stuff or you don't write anything, even if you know the ending you will not be able to write it until all the other stuff your hindbrain wants to put in have been exhausted.  So, having the extra time to get it done is good.

On the other hand, I had staggered my ficathons so I could finish up [community profile] stargate_summer and then concentrate on my [community profile] ssrconfidential fic.  And now ... I will have to be working on both at the same time.  Aaaargh.

[archiveofourown.org profile] ssr_confidential_2017 is a fanfic exchange for Agent Carter, with fic, vids, and art being exchanged.

DON'T PANIC.

This is a very long letter with lots of stuff, but please don't let that intimidate you.  I'm actually fairly easy to please; I am very rarely disappointed with a ficathon story.  I write long and detailed Dear Author letters because I find such things helpful when I'm writing for other people; if you are like me, here you go!  If your style is different and a detailed letter makes you feel hemmed-in, feel free to do what works for you.

The most important thing for me in a fic is that the characters are well-written and recognizably themselves.  Even when I don't like a character, I don't go in for character-bashing.  If nothing else, if the rest of this letter is too much or my kinks just don't fit yours, just concentrate on writing a good story with everyone in character and good spelling and grammar and I will almost certainly love what you come up with.

I just realized that after [community profile] ssrconfidential went live, I never posted my own story here! Sorry, folks, here it is.

Title: Rose in the Spring
Fandom: Agent Carter
Characters: Rose Roberts, Daniel Sousa, a couple of OFCs
Warnings: none
Written for: [personal profile] sholio in [community profile] ssrconfidential 2016
Betaed by: [personal profile] lilacsigil
Summary: Rose Roberts, between seasons 1 and 2.

At AO3.

Miss Roberts, hello, come in! )

AN: Yes, there really was a play called The Mystery of Theodosia Burr on Broadway in 1947. Being a Hamilton geek, I couldn't resist it. I know nothing of it besides the fact that it apparently didn't last long. They really should have gone to see The Heiress, which is a great show that not only was revived many times, it also has a classic movie starring Olivia de Haviland made of it. Show information taken from Broadwayworld.com.

beatrice_otter: Peggy Carter handcuffed to a table (Peggy Carter)
And there's some art and vids, too.  If you like Agent Carter, you should check them out!

I received A Problem at Isodyne, an interesting what-if where Whitney Frost actually got to go to college.

My favorites:

To Lift Again the Banner.  The worst part is this: If they'd asked Gabe to participate in Project: Rebirth, he would probably have said yes. However, they didn't give Gabe a choice, and now he's on the run with only a lady spy and a scrawny kid from Brooklyn to help him.

Bad Romance [Vid]--"Aww, Peggy. I'll always be in your head."  A Peggy/Dottie vid set to the Postmodern Jukebox version of Bad Romance.

All Of Me--Between countries, between languages, between death and life: Ana Jarvis has been all of this for years. Portrait of a survivor.  Brilliant character study.

Out of the Cave--When Whitney Frost escapes the asylum, Dottie Underwood is there waiting with a plan.  Fun story, with interesting meditations on power and powerlessness and what drives these two women.

A Voice for America--When Angie takes a job as a voice actor on US Army propaganda films, she has no idea who she'll end up working with.  Or, the troubling problem of Captain America's English accent.  Fun Peggy/Angie AU, just wish it was longer.

Not The Last Dance This Time--beautiful fanart of Peggy and Colin Wilkes.

One of the Lucky Ones.  The anniversaries we want to forget will always sneak up on us. Sousa, for instance, wants nothing more than to move on from the blast that took his leg. Carter is more tight-lipped about the things she's lost. Neither of them is willing to stay back-benched.

Rose in the Spring.  Rose Roberts, between seasons 1 and 2.

In the Dead Lava Streets.  New York is a devil's dream, the most urbanized city in the world. It is all geometry angles and stone. It is mythical, a city buried by a volcano. Five times Howard Stark met Joseph Manfredi, and one time he did not.

Not Your Fairytale Princes.  Peggy/Dottie.  "Forgive me for doing my job," Peggy said. "I'm not exactly ready to play therapist to world-weary spies, not yet."

Four Times Peggy Tried to Run Away (And the One Time it Finally Worked).  This is my new canon for what Peggy was like as a kid, it's just delightful.

One thing: I do have an embarrassment squick, which makes humor kind of hit-or-miss sometimes.  The kind of humor where someone does something embarrassing and the audience is laughing at them makes me uncomfortable because I identify too much with the person getting laughed at, so instead of being funny it is squicky.  On the other hand, the kind of humor where the audience is laughing with the characters I really enjoy.

If you want to make me the happiest recipient ever, here are some other things to keep in mind (not all of which will apply to all fandoms):
Specifics!
Dottie Underwood.  I am really interested in Dottie. What was the Red Room training like and how does it still affect her?  What was she doing between seasons 1 & 2? Are there other current Black Widows, and what happened to the other girls she was training with?  Is she still a Red Room agent or on her own now, and what's the larger backing to the Red Room (KGB, HYDRA, general Soviet villainy)?  How does all this fits into the larger MCU framework?  Does she ever join up with the nascent HYDRA in the SSR?  Does her fascination with Peggy ever wax and wane?  Does she ever work with the Winter Soldier?

Howard Stark/Whitney Frost.  Howard Stark/Whitney Frost: what changes, what stays the same?  If she no longer has to kill people to get to do the science she *really* wants to do, how does that change her?  (I would think that depends on when they meet, how much sexism/creepy guys she's had to put up with to get where she is.  Like, young!Whitney just starting out wants nothing more than to do science, whereas post!season2!Whitney.  The ep with her backstory made me wonder if she was a victim of some sort of sexual abuse, both with her "uncle" and later that first agent, but I don't insist on that interpretation.  (Goes cold and still around him, "I don't like him" but won't say why--could easily be a child testing the waters, what is acceptable to say about the abuse she's experienced.)  Howard's a dick, but his reaction to competent women seems to be "awesome, let's work together, can we create something," which Whitney desperately needs.  If you do something post!season2, though, it shouldn't be an easy relationship or redemption.  If you do a fanvid for Whitney, The Rules of the Road by Cy Coleman would be a great song for her.  (I like Rosemary Clooney's version best, but I couldn't find it on Youtube--it's a little more upbeat than the version linked.  Lena Horne also did an awesome recording of it.)

Peggy Carter/Gabe Jones.
This is the comics pairing, and I read a couple of AWESOME Peggy/Gabe fics early on, and really imprinted on the pairing.  I have been very "meh" about both the pairing options we were offered in season 2.  Where was Gabe during all this?  What is he doing, post War?  Does meeting up with Wilkes give Carter a nudge to go look him up again, or do they meet again on a case, or have they been corresponding this whole time?  What are some of the racial/sexist issues they're going to face as a couple in the late 40s?

Rose Roberts.  She loves California!  She loves her job!  She's such a cheerfully competent character!  I WANT LOTS OF GREAT FIC ABOUT HER SAVING THE DAY THROUGH STEREOTYPICAL MIDDLE-AGED FAT WOMEN SKILLS.  Like, she ALWAYS has just what you need in her large purse, and it serves as a great blunt object in a fight because it is SO HEAVY AND FULL OF STUFF that when she whacks you with it, you go DOWN.  I don't want anything depressing.  I want her to be happy and fulfilled and to have FUN.

Peggy Carter.  Peggy is so much fun, and I love every aspect of her.  I particularly would enjoy casefic, but I would also enjoy her hanging out with friends (Angie, Edwin and Ana, Rose, any of the Howling Commandoes are the ones I'd be most happy about.  Howard, Daniel, and Dr. Wilkes I wouldn't mind.  Jack Thompson I don't like.)  And I would also welcome Peggy/Steve, set during the war, flashbacks, AU where he gets rescued, whatever.  If you were going to do a fanvid of her, Pistol Packin' Mama by Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters would be AWESOME.  For Peggy/Steve, the obvious song for a fanvid would be It's Been A Long, Long Time (the song that Nick Fury put on in Steve's apartment in Cap2, it would also be a perfect Steve/Bucky fanvid) (My favorite cover of that song is the one linked, Harold Arlen's orchestra with Kitty Kalen on vocals).

General songs that would make good fanvids for the show that I would love to receive even if they don't fit the characters/pairings I requested:
It Takes a Woman from Hello, Dolly
Hot Rod Mama by Ramblin Jimmy Dolan
A vid about jingoism, patriotism, and obfuscation could be set to "Motherhood" from Hello, Dolly
I'm not enough into Jarvis to want a fic about him, but I would LOVE a Jarvis vid to Stiff Upper Lip by the Gershwins (recorded by so many artists, you have a lot of selection.)
Imagine My Frustration is Ella Fitzgerald belting out her frustrations about being overlooked.  Could work for Peggy, Dottie, Whitney, Wilkes, any or all of them.

AN: This fic attempts to bridge the gap between the show (which ends with Thompson as chief of the New York office of the SSR) and the Agent Carter one-shot (in which Thompson is not the chief of the New York office as the SSR becomes SHIELD). It will undoubtedly be jossed, but there you have it.
