beatrice_otter: Vader and Leia (Vader and Leia)
Here is my Fic In A Box fic! I love Mace Windu, and also, he is a Jedi Master. I'm supposed to believe that being thrown out a window was enough to kill him? Yeah, sure, he got his arm chopped off. So did Luke at Cloud City. You will notice Luke didn't die.

Military pilots never got sent on intelligence missions. At least, not if they had working ships. The Alliance had lost a lot of ships in close succession, first at Scarif and then at Yavin, at the same time as they'd started fighting the Empire directly instead of just the occasional ambush or hit-and-run attack on lightly defended targets. They were short on combat pilots, and even shorter on ships.

So Luke was very confused when he got a message to see General Draven and not tell anybody about it. )

[community profile] sedoretuex has revealed, and I can now reveal that I wrote TWO stories! (I have not yet had time to read any stories but my own--I have been really busy this January--but I am planning on making my way through the collection soon.)

A sedoretu is a specific organization of a poly marriage created by Ursula K. Le Guin in her short story "A Fisherman of the Inland Sea" aka "Another Story" available in a 1994 short story collection of the same name. It includes four people and specific arrangements of the relationships inside it. All people have a "moiety" that is considered as inherent as gender; the two moieties are Morning and Evening. Sex with someone of the same moiety is considered incest. The expected relationships within each sedoretu are:
The Morning woman and the Evening man (the “Morning marriage”)
The Evening woman and the Morning man (the “Evening marriage”)
The Morning woman and the Evening woman (the “Day marriage”)
The Morning man and the Evening man (the “Night marriage”)
(i.e. two homosexual and two heterosexual pairings) Here is the Fanlore explanation of it and the E2 explanation.

I like sedoretus because they create such interesting dynamics, one doesn't often see poly arrangements with the more rigid structures and cultural weight that one tends to find in a marriage. And fitting them into the worldbuilding of whatever fandom is always an interesting challenge.

My assignment was a Star Wars Legends Luke/Mara/Han/Leia foursome. I wrote a getting-together story, because that was most obvious; problem is, I've already done a Mara poly getting-together story (though that one was Luke/Mara/Lando), and Mara's character arc was roughly the same in both, and although I like the fic in general I was not thrilled that I couldn't find some other driving force for her. I include a diagram at the end if you have trouble visualizing the structure of the relationship.

I just realized that there are several fics I've written recently that aren't here! They're on AO3, but not cross-posted, and since I am a fanatic about crossposting fic (being old enough to have watched with dismay as whole favorite ARCHIVES vanished into the mists of time), here they are! First, we have Introductions, a Lando and Luke piece.

Title: Introductions
Characters: Luke, Lando
Fandom: Star Wars
Author: Beatrice_otter
Summary: Lando's first impression of Luke Skywalker wasn't very positive. Dumb kid who stumbled into the Empire's crosshairs somehow and then wandered into an incredibly obvious trap and needed to be rescued by the very friends he was supposed to be rescuing.

On AO3.

I just realized that after the [community profile] starwarsrollingremix authors were revealed, I never posted my story here! There was one starter story, The Devil in the Dust by [archiveofourown.org profile] sevenofspade, and three chains of remixes. I was the first remix in my chain. It was an interesting experience. Obviously, we didn't get to pick what story we remixed, and we only got two weeks from the first time we got it to the due date. So there wasn't any time to ponder or think, you just had to get it and go. It wasn't a fic I would have picked to remix; for one thing, I'm pretty sure there were some thematic stuff going on that I was missing that would make the plot make sense. But I didn't have time to let it sit and ponder it, even though that feeling of missing something crucial made me really leery about remixing it. Remixing works best, imo, when you take something to pieces and play with the guts of it. But you can't do that if you're not quite sure what the guts ARE. Which left me ignoring theme and plot and doing a character remix.. But it was a time travel/vision thing--none of the three characters were from the same time period, so I could either just ... retell the story (boring!) or take the setting (desert) and the characters and look at how the deserts they grew up in shaped them. And throw in some meta about the Force while we're at it, because they're all strong in the Force. So that's how I ended up with my story.

As to the title, both the desert and the Force are vast beyond knowing, and the remix subtitle refers to both the problems I was having pinning down the original fic well enough to remix it, and to the old saying the devil is in the details (picking up on the title of the original).

Summary: Poe turns big dark eyes on him and Finn feels something ache in his chest. “Tell me, Finn, how is that gonna look, buddy? You save my life, we take you in and then we throw you back when it suits us? I wouldn’t fight for a Resistance like that and neither would you.”

He wants to say, yes I would, but with Poe looking up at him the words die on his lips.

Reccing this because I love how in-character Leia and Luke both are.
beatrice_otter: Vader and Leia (Vader and Leia)
Here is a Star Wars question for you guys!  And I hope someone who's been reading the new comics can tell me if there is a canon answer for this. When Darth Vader learned about Luke, how much did he find out?  Like, did he think that Obi-Wan had been raising him as an apprentice, or did his agents go to Tatooine and dig up that Luke had been raised by his aunt and uncle on their moisture farm?

A really great look at Luke, Han, and Wedge in the days after the destruction of the first Death Star.

beatrice_otter: Luke and Leia on the Death Star (Luke and Leia)
You know what's really frustrating?  Finding a fic with a really awesome, interesting, and unique idea, but so badly executed/poorly executed that I can't bear to read it.  Everything from homonym fail to characterization fail.  (But, like really weird homonym fail, too--more proofreading was needed.)  But it was a really great premise that I wanted to explore!  And there was so much promise; they'll probably be a really great ficcer when they get some more experience.  But this ... gah.  What finally threw me out so hard I stopped reading was when a Luke Skywalker who had been raised as a Jedi was more hotheaded and aggressive than canon!Luke had been in the same situation on screen.  Like, yelling and shoving people when canon!Luke just shrugged and ignored it.

Characters: Luke Skywalker, Rostek Horn
Word Count: 1,653

Prompt: Luke finding out more about Obi-Wan's and Anakin's career as Jedi
Spoilers: I, Jedi
Summary: Tho' much is taken, much abides

AN: Rostek Horn’s partner Jedi Nejaa Halcyon was killed during the Clone Wars; during the Purges Rostek protected Halcyon’s widow and son by marrying the widow and destroying any records tying her and her son Valin to Nejaa Halcyon.  Valin’s son Corran did not learn of his heritage until he was a grown man; when he visited Rostek soon afterwards, he found that Rostek had preserved as much information about the Jedi as he could by encoding it and splicing it into the genes of the plants he grew for a hobby.

Yes, I know this turned out to be more about Rostek Horn than about Luke Skywalker.  Sorry.  I wasn't planning it that way.  I had it all written in Luke's POV, and then I realized it may have been in his POV but it wasn't really about him.  Aargh.
