"Last shuttle to Arkaria will be departing in one half-hour," the computer's voice said over the intercom. "If you will be delayed, please notify the shuttle immediately."

Nyota swore under her breath and broke into a trot. She might be able to finish up and get there in time, but it would be pushing it. Baryon sweeps, while periodically necessary to purge excess warp radiation, were fatal to unshielded living tissue. Everyone had to check out on leaving the ship so they could be sure everyone was off the ship before the sweep started. The shuttle pilot knew that she and Christine and a few others were still aboard handling the last of Medical's packing, but she didn't want to delay things.

The Enterprise, being the Starfleet flagship, was in high demand, and scheduling the time for necessary maintenance was always a challenge. They'd been badly overdue to purge the radiation which built up on the hull over long periods in warp drive. So when Enterprise had the time and was close to the Remmler Array, the premier baryon-maintenance facility on this side of the Federation, they were shoe-horned into an already full schedule. Nyota had spent the past several days fielding complaints from other ships about the interruptions to their schedules.

( She turned a corner and saw a Vulcan in Remmler Array fatigues poking at a computer panel on the wall. He glanced at her. )

Nyota had just made it out of the prisoner encampment and was beginning the delicate process of infiltrating the command center on the river side of the compound when it all went wrong. The pain in her head was so sharp that for a moment she thought that she had been the one hit in the head; but no, she realized after a moment, it wasn't her head; it was Spock's.

The sensation of being hurt/unhurt was quite possibly the strangest thing she'd ever experienced, which for a Starfleet officer serving on a starship on an exploratory mission, was saying quite a lot. It took her a few moments of concentrating to separate out what was her from what was Spock—which was worrying in and of itself. The link was supposed to be a small thing, just enough to sense but not enough to be intrusive, just enough so that they could coordinate the timing on their mission even after being stripped of their communicators.

( This … this was not small, or unintrusive. This was massive, and it was taking everything Nyota had to hang on to her sense of who she was and where and why, and she was deeply afraid for Spock. )

I'm a student, right? With a month till the end of the school year. In that month, besides all the homework and final projects, I have four fics I am currently working on:

That's a good number. Enough that I'm regularly working on something, not so much I can't keep track or get the ones with deadlines done before the deadlines.

Anyway, the S/U fic is all about them discussing "where we go from here" now that Vulcan is gone and T'Pring is dead and Spock explaining all about Vulcan culture and the possibilities for their relationship within Vulcan culture and Uhura Not Happy about all the stuff he's springing on her and his lack of flexibility on what it would mean for her and possible ways of blending their two cultures rather than her just going native like his mother did. Basically, it's my excuse to explore Vulcan culture and gender roles in fic, the fic which grew out of my meta on Vulcan culture and how it affects Worldbuilding in the New Reality. And one of the options Spock mentions is him marrying a nice Vulcan girl who stays home and takes care of the children (hers and Nyota's) and the home, while he and Uhura stay in Starfleet and have adventures together, and come home to visit on leave. And

laurajv mentioned that now she really wants to read a fic about the nice Vulcan girl who's staying on the new Vulcan homeworld raising the kids, including some who are only 1/4 Vulcan. I was like, "dude, whatever, I ain't got time to write it and the reason for stopping the fic where I do is that I genuinely have no clue what Uhura's going to decide, or if she'll figure out some kind of workable compromise." And now, while I still don't know what the hypothetical wife's name would be, I know her backstory and who her best friend is and ... and I don't need another fic right now! I don't have time for it! And this is not something I could hand over to

bunny_support or

prospectus because it's so tied up in my views on Vulcan culture and the backstory that has created itself and (unlike most plot bunnies I have) it would give me hives to try and read someone else's take on it.

This art-deco Spock and Uhura is one of the best pieces of fanart I've seen in a long time.

So, I didn't post anything about/during Racefail '09 because I'm pretty much generic whitebread middle-class American and had nothing to say on the subject that other people weren't saying far more eloquently and didn't want to add to the signal/noise ratio. Also because I'm lazy and don't like conflict.

But you know what? Racism and productive/constructive ways to deal with it and (as much as possible) prevent it are ordinary, everyday situations that should be thought about constantly, not just whenever it happens to blow up. That way, hopefully, we can make things better instead of worse. I still don't have much to say on the subject that others haven't said better, but I do have a rec: Go read the Spock/Uhura Racefail Prevention Post. It's concise, it's positive, and it's got good advice for how to talk and think about issues of race particularly in the fannish realm but also in general. With links you can follow which lead to lots of other places where racism in life and in fandom are discussed in helpful ways.

For those of you who don't know, in the new Star Trek movie Spock and Uhura (a character of color) have a romantic relationship. This has led to a whole lot of fiction and fan attention for Uhura and to the creation of a community dedicated to the pairing. Within two months of its creation,

spock_uhura has had at least one major incident of racefail. The mods then publicly apologized on behalf of the community to the person who'd gotten attacked, put together a post on how to prevent such things from happening again (and then on how to respond appropriately when they inevitably do), and generally serve as an example of how to be responsible human beings.

I swear. If the anti-racism training they'd given us in school had been even 1/4 as sane and reasonable and reality-based as the stuff you can learn through fandom ...

Basically, while they weren't in a relationship in TOS there was definitely chemistry ... and I can look at these scenes and believe they have a history.
