beatrice_otter: All true wealth is biological (Wealth)
I only seldom find author interviews interesting, but I'm glad I checked out Lois McMaster Bujold's latest interview on Smart Podcast, Trashy Books. (Transcript here.) It's a lovely conversation that I quite enjoyed. Two things, in particular, stood out to me. One was simple, when a marriage between two fans who met on Bujold's email list was mentioned:

The great advantage of writing comedies of manners is that you get fans who are into manners.
―Lois McMaster Bujold

which I thought was a great quote. The other thing was a bit deeper, when her famous dictum was brought up: "The rule for finding plots for character-centered novels, which is to ask: 'So what's the worst possible thing I can do to this guy?' And then do it." Here's what she said:

What I was trying to get at with that statement was something about how plot and character have to fit together. For a particular character, there’s a particular quintessential plot that explores that character most beautifully, completely, the way you want, you know. It shows you what you want to learn about him or her – or it, depending, ‘cause science fiction sometimes – rather than, you know, saying, what’s the worst thing I can do to this character, I think it might be better recast as, what is the most revealing thing I can do to this character?

So it’s, it’s meant to be, you know, this, this is the scalpel by which we lay them open, you know. The plot is, plot is what you use to, you know, do exploratory surgery on a character. For every character, there will be a different, different most-revealing thing.

I wish GRRM and other grimdark authors would read this, and take note. Bujold didn't mean torture your characters for the sake of torture, she meant "if you figure out what issue goes to the core of who your character is, and put that in jeopardy, you will get a gripping story in which all the character's hidden facets are revealed." From a Doylist point of view, as you're constructing a plot, it helps to not just throw random bad things at them but to throw things at them that they will a) really care about and b) will help you explore them as a person.

new book
I am pleased to report that a new Cordelia Vorkosigan novel has been sold to Baen Books for publication, tentatively, in February of 2016.

The title is Gentleman Jole and the Red Queen.

It is not a war story. It is about grownups.

And that is probably all I ought to say right now in a venue read by the spoiler-sensitive. It is, after all, a long haul till next February.

2016 will also mark the 30th anniversary of my first publication by Baen, which ought to be good for a little PR fun.

Ta, L.

So, not QUITE a year until the next book, but almost--I can wait that long!  It's better than being worried there wouldn't be any more new books.  Lois has been calling herself "semi-retired" for a while, and you may note that the latest projects have been getting all her work into ebook form (particularly the ones with e-rights reverted to her) and getting an essay collection (basically previously published speeches and interviews) into ebook form ...

From what she's said on the Bujold email list, she had some medical procedures and the recovery from that always stops her writing for a while, but it was taking longer than usual this time because it was combined with various other rl events.

Anyway, I'm just sitting here squeeing, and reflecting on the title.  It doesn't sound like a very Vorkosiverse title--doesn't sound like any of Bujold's previous titles, in fact.  She tends toward short and pithy.  "Brothers in Arms" "Memory" "The Sharing Knife" various place names, etc.

Also, I'm wondering about the Jole in the title.  Same guy as was Aral's aide back in the Vor Game era?  And if so, why "Gentleman" Jole, and not the appropriate military title of whatever era it's set in?  And why Jole and Cordelia, instead of Jole and Aral, or at least Jole and Aral and Cordelia?  I mean, it's possible that Jole and Aral and Cordelia stayed friends after Jole was transferred/promoted/got on with his career, but if they're still close enough to headline a book together after Aral's death, it makes me ponder [personal profile] dira 's Jole/Aral series and what that would look like decades on.

It feels to me like it's most likely not the same Jole, all things considered.  Lois does like to recycle names.  (Dubauer, anyone?)

From LMB's myspace:

Hi all --

The new Vorkosiverse book, henceforth to be titled CryoBurn, is finished and turned in to Baen.

To recap information mentioned previously, the story is an Auditorial investigation that takes place on a planet new to readers, called New Hope II or Kibou-daini. Miles is 39, to go by the very Miles-centered series chronology we've been using. The story uses three viewpoints: Miles, Roic, and a local lad named Jin. The general mode is mystery/thriller/technological-social exploration. About 103,000 words, in twenty chapters and an epilogue.

The book is, tentatively, on the Baen publication schedule for late 2010, probably November.

bests, Lois.

(And my I recommend, again, Edward Gorey's timeless little classic about the writing life, The Unstrung Harp, or, Mr Earbrass Writes a Novel. I nearly always pull it out to re-read toward the end of a book project. It gets funnier every year.)

Well, darn, now I'll have to reread them all to get ready for the new book! (I've been waiting years for this to come out. Sure, I love her Chalionverse books, but after reading the first of her Sharing Knife books, I never bothered to read the rest. But her Vorkosiverse books I cannot rec highly enough.)

Y'know, choosing from among my (many) vorkosiverse quote icons was difficult for this post.
