Lovely author, here is my theory about letters: how much detail people want in a letter is HIGHLY variable. Some people (such as myself) prefer if their recip gives LOTS of guidance on their wishes. Some prefer as little as possible so they can be free as a bird. Most are somewhere in between. So! Here's everything including the kitchen sink if you find it helpful, but feel free to ignore it if it is not helpful. I would rather get a story you were happy with than "well, she said she liked x, so I guess I have to do x even though I don't like x and/or am just not inspired that way."

I'm fairly easy to please; I've been doing ficathons for over a decade and am very rarely disappointed with my gifts. I write long and detailed Dear Author letters because I find such things helpful when I'm writing for other people; if you are like me, here you go! If your style is different and a detailed letter makes you feel hemmed-in, feel free to do what works for you.

The most important thing for me in a fic is that the characters are well-written and recognizably themselves. Even when I don't like a character, I don't go in for character-bashing. If nothing else, if the rest of this letter is too much or my kinks just don't fit yours, just concentrate on writing a story with everyone in character and good spelling and grammar and I will almost certainly love what you come up with.

One thing: I do have an embarrassment squick, which makes humor kind of hit-or-miss sometimes. The kind of humor where someone does something embarrassing and the audience is laughing at them makes me uncomfortable. On the other hand, the kind of humor where the audience is laughing with the characters I really enjoy.

Please no incest.

Here are some other things to keep in mind (not all of which will apply to all fandoms): I don't like it when characters of color are pushed aside so that white characters can take center stage. I love the acknowledgment that female strength comes in many forms, of which the kinds put forward by modern western feminism are only a few. I like cultural diversity, and to know that culture matters to people, but please don't exoticise anything. I like quirky characters. I like unreliable narrators. I like acknowledgment that different people can have different points of view without either of them being wrong. I like stories that engage with problematic aspects of the source, and which deal with privilege in one way or another. If you don't know what I mean by privilege, here are a few links: White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack, and possibly the Spock/Uhura Racefail Prevention Post and associated links.

I like plotty, gen stories, and plotty stories in general, but I don't like explicit sex, particularly when it's just thrown in for teh porn. If there's going to be sex, there needs to be a reason for it within the story--it advances the plot, or characterization, or something (and, again, if you have to do it, please don't make it explicit). I'm asexual; a lot of the time I don't even bother to read the sex scenes. Romance is awesome (as long as both are in character and the romantic plot doesn't hinge on one or both of them being an idiot), but sex-for-the-sake-of-sex is pretty boring to me. I generally prefer no slash.

I love worldbuilding. Sometimes I find exploring the corners of a world or universe to be as fun (or sometimes more fun) than reading stories set in it. I want to know what's behind the curtain. I love hearing about the economics, the politics, the religion, the clothing, the history, all of that kind of stuff. And I want to know why it matters--how is all this cultural background stuff affecting the characters, the plot, everything. You don't have to do deep worldbuilding, but I'll probably enjoy it if you do.

I like AUs, but not complete AUs (i.e. no highschool or college or coffee shop AUs, and especially not mundane AUs--nothing where you keep characters but drop most of the worldbuilding). I like fork-in-the-road type AUs, where one thing is different and the changes all result from that one thing, and you explore what might have been if such-and-such happened. Crackfic is really hit and miss for me, sometimes I love it and sometimes I can't stand it. Basically, if it's the characters we know and love in a ludicrous situation, that's great. If they're OOC or parodied in order to make something funny ... it's not funny to me. I like historical AUs, but only when the author actually knows the history period in question and does thoughtful worldbuilding to meld actual culture of the time with the canon--Regency AUs where everyone's attitude is modern but with a Regency #aesthetic drive me batty. ("But entailments didn't work that way!") I like angst, but not complete and unrelieved angst, and not angst of the type that people cause themselves. While things can get dark or angsty in the middle, I prefer happy endings.

Formats I'm open to: Traditional prose, narrative poetry, in-universe texts.

Rivers of London - Ben Aaronovitch

Peter Grant/Thomas Nightingale, Thomas Nightingale/Alexander Seawoll, Thomas Nightingale

Accidental Time Travel To The Future, Accidental Time Travel To The Past, Changing the Past Has Consequences in the Present, Character and Younger Self Switch Places Unexpectedly, Communicating with the Past/Future Through Letters, Surprise visitors from the future - their future selves are married, Character and Older Self Switch Places Unexpectedly, Teaming Up with a Person from a Different Time Period for a Common Goal, Character From a Dystopia Time Travels to a Utopian Past

There's two aspects of time travel in RoL that really fascinate me equally: first, anything dealing with Nightingale's long life and stuff like that (encountering bb!nightingale in x period!), and second, Peter's visions of the past (and how they often happen to involve rivers). If I had nominated, I would have included Peter/Beverly just for that reason. (Or Nightingale/Peter/Beverly. Or maybe Peter and Lady Ty!) I love how the canon doesn't dwell on race and glass issues, but doesn't shy away from them, either.

Unless you have some dystopian future where Chorley wins and kicks Britain into a new Dark Age as he wants, I can't see the characters traveling back in time voluntarily to change things. Peter's watched too much Doctor Who, and Nightingale and Seawoll both tend to be pragmatic deal-with-life-as-it-is types who probably don't spend much time on what-ifs. So time travel is probably either a) accidental, b) case-related, c) the work of the Faceless Man, or d) all of the above. (But if you have a really great idea that doesn't fit this, go for it.)

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles

Backwards Time Travel Creates New Timelines, Bad Guys Change the Timeline, Canon-Compliant Time Travel, Changing the Past has Consequences for the Future, Changing the Past Has Consequences in the Present, Character Remembers Probable Future Events, Characters From Different Canon Eras Meet Up In A Totally Different Era, Ominous Message from the Future, Outsider POV Of Time Traveler(s), Outsider POV Of Strange Events Caused By Time Travel, Time Travel Averts Dystopia - Time-Traveling Character Retains Memories of Dystopia, Time Travel Fix-It, Time Travel Fix-it - Time Travelers Disagree On How To Fix The Problem

This is one of my all-time favorite shows, and I love Terminator and Terminator II (and don't mind Terminator III). I love Sarah Connor, who grows up fast and reinvents herself along the way and becomes what she needs to be. I love John, totally messed up by being raised as a child soldier, but hopefully messed up in a way that will help him be the leader of the resistance. I love the Reese brothers and their relationships (known and unknown) to the Connors, and how the Connors react to that. I love James Ellison, a man of deep character and faith, with unexpected depths, who gets thrown in way over his head and makes his own way. I love Cameron Phillips, whose ability to fake humanity fluctuates and who has a hidden agenda but is always on John's side (but which John, present!John or future!John, and what difference does that make?) I love Catherine Weaver and trying to figure out what the heck is up with her. I love John Henry and him trying to figure out what it means to be alive.

Go nuts. Write what happens after the last episode! Write about another time jump! Write a missing episode! Write an AU jumping off from some point in canon! Write about what's going on in the future/some characters' pasts! Write about anything that takes advantage of the central premise of canon!

Babylon 5

Delenn/John Sheridan, Lennier & Vir, Michael Garibaldi & Jeffrey Sinclair, Stephen Franklin/Marcus Cole, Susan Ivanova/Talia Winters, Jeffrey Sinclair, Valen

Accidental Time Travel To The Future, Accidental Time Travel To The Past, Alternate Universe - Canonical Character Has Always Been a Time Traveler, Canon-Compliant Time Travel, Changing the Past Has Consequences in the Present, Character Only One Who Remembers Temporary Timeline Alteration, Characters From Different Canon Eras Meet Up In A Totally Different Era, Communicating with the Past/Future Through Letters, Outsider POV Of Time Traveler(s), Time Travel Fix-it - Time Travelers Disagree On How To Fix The Problem, Character and Older Self Switch Places Unexpectedly, Character and Younger Self Switch Places Unexpectedly, Future Self and Significant Other Go Back in Time to Rescue Younger Self from Bad Childhood

To be honest, the only real idea for time travel I have in this universe involves Jeff becoming Valen, and I am a SUCKER for Catherine Sakai being thrown back in the past with him and them being reunited there. However! I love these other characters a lot too, and would be thrilled with stories about any of these characters or pairings, so here's a nice grab-bag of tropes to play with.

Star Wars

Anakin Skywalker | Darth Vader & Ahsoka Tano, Bail Organa & Leia Organa, Leia Organa & Anakin Skywalker, Leia Organa & Padmé Amidala, Leia Organa & Mace Windu, Luke Skywalker & Shmi Skywalker, Luke Skywalker/Mara Jade, Rey & Ahsoka Tano, Lando Calrissian, Mara Jade

Accidental Time Travel To The Future, Accidental Time Travel To The Past, Alternate Universe - Canonical Character Has Always Been a Time Traveler, Changing the Past has Consequences for the Future, Character Accidentally Possesses Their Younger Self, Character and Older Self Switch Places Unexpectedly, Character and Younger Self Switch Places Unexpectedly, Character Remembers Probable Future Events, Characters From Different Canon Eras Meet Up In A Totally Different Era, Future Self and Significant Other Go Back in Time to Rescue Younger Self from Bad Childhood, Future Self Time Travels to Warn Present Self, Ominous Message from the Future, Surprise Visitors from the Future - Their Child(ren) Accidentally Travel(s) Back in Time, Surprise visitors from the future - their future selves are married, Time Travel Fix-It - Derailing The Bad Guy's Descent Into Evil, Time Travel Fix-it - Time Travelers Disagree On How To Fix The Problem, Communicating Across Time From an Alternate Dimension, Traveling Through Time to an Alternate Dimension, Dimension Hopping to Find a Timeline That's Not Doomed

I love a good time-travel fixit! Go wild! Extra bonus points for coming up with something that's not a common plot for SW time travel AUs, or doing it with a different character! Even more extra bonus points for having a fic where, say, killing Palpatine or saving Anakin doesn't magically fix all the things that are screwed up about the Repbulic and/or the Jedi.

My theory on canon for Star Wars is that the first six movies are canon, and anything else you take the interesting bits and feel free to leave the rest. It's not that I dislike the newer stuff, it's that I don't feel constrained by it. Sometimes the new stuff is better than the old Legends, sometimes Legends was better, sometimes I don't like either, sometimes I like both.

DNW incest and Kylo Ren as anything but the villain.

Crossovers

Henry “Indiana” Jones & Peggy Carter, Julian Bashir/Lando Calrissian, Mary Poppins & Caractacus Potts (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang)

Accidental Time Travel To The Future, Accidental Time Travel To The Past, Alternate Universe - Canonical Character Has Always Been a Time Traveler, Bad Guys Change the Timeline, Character Is a Time Lord, Character Only One Who Remembers Temporary Timeline Alteration, Ominous Message from the Future, Time Travel for Academia, Time Travel for Historical Research, Time Travel Fix-it - Time Travelers Disagree On How To Fix The Problem, Communicating Across Time From an Alternate Dimension, Time travel also includes uncontrolable dimension travel aspect

I would probably never have thought of any of these crossover pairings, but they are awesome, and I would LOVE to see something with any of them.

Star Trek

Original Male Romulan/Original Female Vulcan, Original Female Romulan/Original Male Vulcan, Original Betazoid Character(s), Original Trill Character(s), Original Vulcan Character(s)

Accidental Time Travel To The Future, Accidental Time Travel To The Past, Backwards Time Travel Creates New Timelines, Canon-Compliant Time Travel, Changing the Past has Consequences for the Future, Changing the Past Has Consequences in the Present, Characters From Different Canon Eras Meet Up In A Totally Different Era, Outsider POV Of Strange Events Caused By Time Travel, Time Travel for Academia, Time Travel for Historical Research, Enemies Travel Back In Time Together

I love worldbuilding. I really, really do, and alien OCs time-traveling seems to me to be the PERFECT excuse for it. I love TOS, TNG, and DS9, and am meh about AOS, VOY, and ENT. Haven't seen Discovery, though I hope to get it for Christmas. My headcanon for Vulcan and Romulan culture is HEAVILY influenced by the old 80s novels (especially Diane Duane!) so if you know that, AWESOME, if you don't, don't sweat it.

Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen

Elizabeth Bennet, Fitzwilliam Darcy, Jane Bennet, Lydia Bennet, Charles Bingley, Mary Bennet, Charlotte Lucas, Colonel Fitzwilliam, Kitty Bennet
Time Stops For Some Places But Not In Others (As in TV's Once Upon a Time), Time Travel for Academia Time, Travel for Historical Research, Surprise Visitors from the Future - Grieving Spouse When Pairing Isn't Together Yet in Present, Communicating with the Past/Future Through Letters, Character Is a Time Lord, Time Travel Back - Stuck in the Past with Younger Love Interest, Character Accidentally Possesses Their Younger Self, Character and Younger Self Switch Places Unexpectedly

I don't generally go for Modern AUs, of which there are many in P&P fandom. I think a more fantasy-style time travel than SF/F would be interesting here, but there are so many options, have fun.

Star Trek: The Next Generation

Deanna Troi, Beverly Crusher/Jack Crusher/Jean-Luc Picard, Sam Lavelle/Taurik, Taurik & Sam Lavelle, Taurik/Selar, Lwaxana Troi, Ro Laren, Selar, Sito Jaxa, Tasha Yar
Accidental Time Travel To The Future, Accidental Time Travel To The Past, Backwards Time Travel Creates New Timelines, Canon-Compliant Time Travel, Changing the Past Has Consequences in the Present, Character Only One Who Remembers Temporary Timeline Alteration, Future Self and Significant Other Go Back in Time to Rescue Younger Self from Bad Childhood, Surprise Visitors from the Future - Grieving Spouse When Pairing Isn't Together Yet in Present, Surprise visitors from the future - their future selves are married, Time Travel for Academia, Time Travel for Historical Research

My headcanon for Vulcan and Romulan culture is HEAVILY influenced by the old 80s novels (especially Diane Duane!) so if you know that, AWESOME, if you don't, don't sweat it. Sito Jaxa and Tasha Yar deserved better, Ro Laren was fascinating (and I love that they didn't make her decision to betray Starfleet "evil", just understandable given her history and situation), I would love anything that explores Lwaxana Troi's hidden depths (as well as everything she bares for all the world to see), and I've long thought that polyamory would have saved Picard/Crusher/Jack a lot of angst.
