Title: Hand In Glove
Fandom: NASA Mars Mission posters
Word Count: 3554
Summary: This, Javier Navarro thought in disgust as he stared up at the tower he was supposed to fix, was not exactly the heroic and exciting thing he had imagined when he’d seen the NASA recruiting posters and, on a whim, submitted an application.

My assignee was [personal profile] lady_ragnell , and we matched on NASA's Mars mission recruiting posters.  It was, uh, not the fandom I thought I was signing up for!  It turns out that in the last decade NASA has come out with TWO sets of really cool artsy posters to drum up interest in future space missions, and I only knew of one of them, and it turns out that the one I knew (Visions of the Future, go check them out, they're REALLY COOL) was not the one nominated!  I'm just glad that I googled before I started writing, because that would have been bad.  I still think the Visions of the Future posters are way cooler, but the Mars Mission recruiting posters are cool too, and I had fun.  I wrote Hand In Glove, a story about a junior technician on Mars named Javier.  I've been getting more into NASA and real-life space travel (NASA has a great Youtube channel), and so it was an opportunity to basically write original-fic about Mars settlers, which I enjoyed.  The only problem was that I started out with world-building and character and just wrote for a while, and then had trouble figuring out how to END it.

Title: From Castle to Palace
Fandom: Beauty and the Beast/French History RPF
Word Count: 17,602
Summary: The curse is broken. Belle and her Beast would be happy to just live quietly together in the curse-free castle. Unfortunately, the rest of France has other ideas …

While I was trying to figure out how to end Hand In Glove, I set it aside to write a treat.  It wasn't supposd to be long, just a short Beauty and the Beast fic.  And then, as I was writing a page or two and surfing Wikipedia to try and figure out if it was possible to match the movie to actual events in French history so that I could crib from that hand have some of the worldbuilding done for me (because in my experience, actualfax history is usually more bonkers than anything I could come up with), I found something.  A way to PERFECTLY fit the movie into French history!  And then we were off to the races, and I was writing thousands of words a day and the plot bunny had EATEN MY BRAIN and I had to go back to the spreadsheet of requests because I needed to find someone else to gift it to because it didn't fit the request that I had started writing for even a little bit.  Fortunately, [personal profile] eida had the perfect request, and so she was the one it was gifted to.

It turns out that the guy who became Louis XVI (you know, the guy who got his head chopped off during the French Revolution and was married to Marie Antoinette) was not originally supposed to be the heir to the throne!  He had an older brother (also named Louis, seriously, WTF, France?) who died when he was ten, and apparently part of the reason for some of Louis XVI's issues was that ever after his family had the attitude that the older brother was better in every way (smarter, kinder, braver, etc.) and that the new Crown Prince (which the French call the Dauphin, literally "dolphin," WTF, France?) was a pale shadow and a poor replacement.  Anyway, you remember that the curse was supposed to break on the Beast's 21st birthday?  And had lasted for roughly ten years by the time Belle shows up?  So the Prince would have been about ten when he was cursed?  (WTF, Disney?)  Yeah.  What if, WHAT IF, FOLKS, what if the Beast was that Louis who in our timeline died but in the world of the movie was merely THOUGHT dead because of the curse? This thought grabbed ahold of me and wouldn't let go.  Louis XVI!  Marie Antoinette!  Louis XV and Madame du Barry!  The French Revolution!  The Enlightenment!  I had to SERIOUSLY restrain myself to keeep this to only 17,000 words, because this wanted to become an EPIC spanning the Beast's reign as Louis XVI (because he was one of FOUR BROTHERS THREE OF WHOM WERE NAMED LOUIS, WTF France?  HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO KEEP THEM ALL STRAIGHT?  HOW DID THEIR PARENTS KEEP THEM ALL STRAIGHT?).  Anyway!  Revolutionary and pre-Revolutionary France is not my period, and I was able to write this with help from Wikipedia and Google, but to do justice to the whole longer sweep of story that was trying to run away with me, I would have had to do like actual research, which I didn't have time to do.  So I exercised GREAT restraint and found a stopping place at around 17k, and then went back to Hand In Glove and figured out how to end it.

Title: The Music of the Spheres
Fandom: Fantasia (1940)
Word Count: 1662
Summary: This is the music that underscores all.

This was a late pinch-hit that I got.  It was past the first deadline, but since I had it on my list of "possible treats to write" it was really easy to crank out something in a short period of time.  It's all because [archiveofourown.org profile] dussek fics.

Title: On the Nature of Miracles
Fandom: Chalionverse/World of the Five Gods
Word Count: 1475
Summary: Even the Mother's miracles of healing have limits

This was a treat for [personal profile] keerawa , a pinch-hitter who wasn't signed up and so would not otherwise have received a fic.  I enjoyed the opportunity to take some of the meta that's been discussd on the Bujold mailing list and put it into fic form.  (Namely: if the gods can influence living things like people, animals, and (sometimes with enough foresight) plants, but cannot affect matter, how the heck does a miracle of healing work?
