Where the names "Sherlock" and "Mycroft" come from

That was very cool! The art teacher at my high school was Mrs Maycroft so I always assumed that Mycroft came from that surname, and Sherlock as another surname, but I'd never seen any actual research on the matter. In South Australia (the state next to mine) it's extremely common to give surnames as given names, so I never really thought it was weird.
