I have Dell laptop which I love dearly. The problem is, when it's unplugged, the monitor goes dimmer and is incredibly difficult to use if I'm in a place with normal lighting, and impossible if I want to go outside. I know this conserves power, but it makes the laptop almost unusable as a, you know, laptop since I have to keep it plugged in if I want to use it.

There's got to be some way to set it so that the monitor stays fully-bright when you unplug it. I've been all through the settings and power windows and haven't found it yet. Help!

ETA: Problem solved, with [livejournal.com profile] dunv_i's help.

Look at your keyboard. Do you have a key that says [fn] on it? It's probably written in blue, if it has it. And then there should be the occasional character on other keys in blue - if you hold down the [fn] key, it uses those. On most models, the up and down arrows have little suns on them which changes the brightness. The brightness will revert whenever you plug/unplug it to where it was last time you had it plugged/not plugged in (so like, right now, mine is superbright unplugged and dark plugged because I'm in a dark room and I want to know if it comes unplugged).

Unless yours is different, but going off of the... 6 Dell brands I've used in recent years, I think this is the same for all.
