We traveled in 12-passenger Dodge van with the back two benches taken out, and a mattress put in their place. I spent the trip in the back, playing on that mattress.
Regarding ATMs, I didn't think to mention that debit cards didn't exist until long after credit cards were a common thing. I should have, you're right! And without debit cards, there are no ATMs.
The only time people would go to a bank not their own and ask for money to be transferred, that I know of, was when you were transferring LARGE sums of money. Most people just used paper checks if they were buying something that cost more than they had in cash, or used traveler's checks while traveling.
As to clothing--my grandfather was a farmer. Up through the 90s, the only times he wore jeans and work shirts was when he was actively doing physical labor. When he was not out working on the farm or whatever, "dressed down" meant slacks and a button down. Starting in the late 90s, he would wear jeans sometimes ... but always with a button down shirt, never a T-shirt. The only t-shirts he owned were undershirts.
