Due to some thoughtless programming decisions at Costume College (the largest costume convention in the US), a group of BIPOC costumers led by Gigi (La Bella Donna) organized an online symposium on the Silk Road by costumers of color, drawing especially from the ethnic groups who originated along the Silk Road. There are a lot of good presentations, some costuming focused and some not. I'm not done watching them, but so far the most generally applicable is an excellent exploration/explanation of the differences between and nuances of appropriation and appreciation, and how to address it, by Jessica Van Hattem.
