She absolutely was suffering from severe depression for a long time, and was medicated for it, and was one of those unfortunate people for whom all the medications available at the time had only short-term effects. She'd get on a medication, it would work for a while, it would stop working, she would be switched to something else, it would work for a while, it would stop working, ad nauseum.

I just ... there's no good answer. The situation with Campbell was a lot easier.
