'Tis the season! Yuletide has begun, and I have made my nominations! For those of you who don't know, Yuletide is a small-fandom ficathon that's been going for fifteen years now. No fandom is too small! You know that book/movie/show/podcast/art/whatever that you sigh about because there's no fic, or not much of it? Yuletide is the time to change that!
Yuletide is an annual fic exchange for rare and obscure fandoms run through the Archive of Our Own. Participants sign up to write a story of at least 1,000 words in a fandom someone else has requested, using the selected characters from that fandom. In return, they receive a story of at least 1,000 words in a fandom they have requested, featuring requested characters.
We're now in the nominating period, where people suggest fandoms and characters for the tag set. (Fandoms are eligible as long as they have fewer than 1,000 completed works in English on AO3 and FF.net; anyone can nominate up to three fandoms, with up to four characters per fandom.) Nomination ends on September 21, after which the mods go through and make sure everything that was nominated is actually eligible and reject the fandoms that are too big. Sign ups open October 10th. You don't have to have nominated to sign up, but on the other hand, if you don't nominate you can only choose from fandoms that other people nominated. You have to request at least three fandoms, to increase the chances of matching you with someone willing to write one of your fandoms; you can request as many as six fandoms. You have to offer to write at least four fandoms (again, to increase the chances of being matchable). Now, you only have to write one story, and chances are you'll only receive one story, but you do have to offer and request more than one fandom because the more obscure it is, the fewer people will offer to write it and the harder it is to match.

Assignments go out sometime between October 22nd and 25th. Fics are due December 18th, the archive goes live on December 25th, and authors are revealed on January 1.

There's a whole huge set of cultures and traditions around Yuletide, but that's basically it. You write and receive stories in rare fandoms. Some of which are small but not really rare (like, say, Rivers of London). Sometimes, you may be writing the first fic for that fandom in history (as I did in 2009,; although that Yuletide saw two other fics in the same fandom, mine was posted first). I've participated in Yuletide every year since 2007. It's always been fun. Also, sometimes persistence pays off. As a kid, one of my favorite movies to watch with my grandpa was an obscure 1960s John Wayne romcom called Donovan's Reef. I requested that movie every year from 2007 until 2015, and you know what? In 2015, I got a really excellent Donovan's Reef fic. (Thank you, Damkianna!) Anyway, if you've never done it before but are interested, the FAQ is here.
