It's quite possible that I just ran across unwrangled tags enough times that I thought they used to be sorted differently.

I mean, sure, I could put characters in freeform tags, it just looks wrong, but whatever, but I really don't understand why the archive can't come up with something that works on this.

Frankly, FF.net is better for finding fic about minor characters. It's just a pity about the whole rest of the site.
