My J-term class this year was "Music of Spiritual and Religious Formation," a class I highly enjoyed. I chose to write a hymn text instead of a paper, and I finally got it done. Here it is! It's an Advent hymn, obviously, and the tune is "O Savior, Rend the Heavens Wide," #38 in the LBW for you Lutherans out there.

Now is the time to keep awake;
The Bridegroom comes in His good time.
We must be ready, lamps to take,
Glad songs to sing and bells to chime.

Christ comes to set the captives free
From sin and death and powers of Hell
To make us branches of His tree
And make us fit in Heaven to dwell.

Stir up your power, Lord Christ, and come.
Wake up your people from their sleep:
Shake up the mountains, every one,
And send your winds o’er ocean’s deep.

All people in the world are grass
Like grass we wither and decay
God’s word endures, will come to pass;
The former things will pass away.

The days are surely coming soon
When all God’s promises come true.
Then God will bind up every wound
And make the world reborn anew.

Text: Anna C. Haugen, 2007
Tune: O HEILAND, REISS DIE HIMMEL AUF (Gesangbuch, Augsburg, 1666) LM

Quote of the Day:
You can safely assume you’ve created God in your own image when it turns out God hates all the same people you do.
-Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird
