The Nanny State
Mar. 24th, 2007 10:58 pmSo there's currently a legal battle over the US law that says you can't allow children to access Internet porn, which requires sites having such to request a confirmation that anyone viewing it is over 18. I don't know enough about the law to really talk about it, but this caught my eye:
'"It is not reasonable for the government to expect all parents to shoulder the burden to cut off every possible source of adult content for their children, rather than the government's addressing the problem at its source," a government attorney, Peter D. Keisler, argued in a post-trial brief.' (from CNN.com)
!!! Excuse me. Censoring things for a child should be the responsibility of the parent, not the government. Different parents have different standards for what children should be allowed to see at what ages. A large portion of the people who scream for the government to do it want government control because they're too lazy to, you know, be parents. Now, in certain specific cases it is okay for the government to act in a supporting role, but it shouldn't be doing it all!
