I'm in the right place!
Nov. 15th, 2006 06:23 pmSo, yesterday at lunch, the table I was sitting at was having a wonderful discussion of written science fiction & fantasy vs. mass media sci-fi. One of my friends was also at the table, but she's not a fan, so she went over to the other table to find out what they were discussing. She came back in disgust, because they were talking about the theology of Star Wars. And I said to myself, "Self, it's no wonder you feel at home here."
Tonight was Fish Night. Every year one of the professors has a pot-luck dinner the week before Thanksgiving, where every dish has to have fish and/or be fish themed. I.e. you can bring a chocolate cake, if the cake is a) shaped like a fish or b) has a picture of a fish in the icing (we had both varities tonight). I went along for the fellowship and not for the food, as I have a minor fish allergy. And am I glad I went! When most people were done eating we had a short hymn-sing with everyone, and sea or fish themed hymns (mostly old schmalzy camp-revival type stuff), finished up with a "Fish Night Chorale" (to the tune of "O Morning Star") that someone had written years ago. Then, as most people drifted back to their conversations, a large group of us clustered around the piano and the bookcase next to it. The bookcase was four shelves high and held nothing but hymnals, some very old. We spent the next hour pulling them out and leafing through them for cool hymns, some old favorites, some forgotten gems, some new cool ones. It was great! And I thought to myself, "Self, this place was made for you."
( Fish Night Chorale, sung to Wie Schõn Leuchtet (O Morning Star) )
Luther Bowl: every year, LTSG hosts a flag football tournament for seminaries; this year, eight participated (including us), and we had teams come from as far away as Ohio and the Carolinas. The day was sunny, but we'd had a lot of rain that week, so the fields were basically a mudpit. Trinity Lutheran Seminary won the tournament this year, and a good time was had by all. I was part of the procession to bless the fields before the games started; it was quite a procession! We had Ryan with a thurible in front (you know, the thing with incense on the end of a chain? it's the first time I've seen one used by Lutherans!), two candle bearers, one banner bearer (me), one of the professors (wearing the gold sequined chasuble they use for Easter Vigil), and a kazoo band playing "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God." It was great.
