Cheyenne Mountain to close
Aug. 1st, 2006 08:25 amThe Air Force has decided to close down Cheyenne Mountain for sure. For those who don't know, Cheyenne Mountain is a facility underneath the mountain that was built in 1961 to monitor possible nuclear launches from the Communist Bloc countries, through the North American Radar Air Defence (NORAD) and other organizations. Given its age and changed mission in the 21st century, they are transferring all its functions to other places, though they will be maintaining it in case needs change in the future.
And as everyone knows, Stargate Command is located under NORAD in Cheyenne Mountain. So we know the real reason for the closure--what with battling the Orii threat, the SGC needs to expand and so they're moving NORAD out to give them room. Right? ;) I'm curious to see if they'll mention the closure on the show. Either show, though it'd be more likely to be seen on SG-1 than Atlantis because SG-1 works out of Stargate Command while Atlantis is, well, in Atlantis which is in the Pegasus galaxy.
