Date: 2010-10-18 12:52 am (UTC)From:Donovan's Reef is a lot of fun, and I grew up watching it with my grandparents; there's a lot of humor, and action, and beautiful sets, and the way they handled Lelani was beautiful. It kind of boggles me that they can handle Lelani so well, and in the same movie fail so hard with the Japanese and Chinese comic-relief characters (though I suppose for a 1963 movie to realize that there's a difference between Japanese and Chinese, and even make a joke out of it, was huge). Also, the misogyny makes me fume (John Wayne spanks his girlfriend for getting uppity). But overall, I enjoy it a lot.
