So, for the second-to-last episode of Stargate Atlantis ever, TPTB chose to do ...

CSI: John Sheppard!

Instead of doing a Stargate episode, they do CSI. But, oh, no, that wasn't enough! Instead of Atlantis, they do the John Sheppard Show! Besides twenty seconds with Jennifer Keller, the first SGA character to show up was Rodney McKay, and he didn't show up until 26 minutes in! There were short cameos from Woolsey, Zelenka, and Harriman, as well. No Ronon, no Teyla, not even mentioned anywhere. Teyla would have been a very valuable asset--she can sense Wraith, right? Surely she could have at least pointed them in the right direction. And if you're going to hunt Wraith on a planet, well, Ronon and Teyla are the two you want heading it, which is, oh yeah, why they're on the show in the first place. But I watch Stargate for Sci-fi, snark, and teamy goodness. Of which there was precious little of #1, and none of #2 or #3. (Even in the Sheppard/McKay scenes, there was no snark--it was all infodump.) None of the characters we know were in character, which fits with being an alternate universe, but they still could have tried to make them interesting and not just cardboard cutouts whose only function is to serve the plot, y'know? I MISS MY SHOW!

It wouldn't have bothered me anywhere near as much if this had been somewhere in the middle of the series, with time for episodes featuring other characters and space battles and running-for-the-gate etc. around it. But as the second-to-last episode? It really sucked. I tend to be a lot more charitable than a lot of fans, and I've never suffered the delusion that my personal vision is the ONLY POSSIBLE WAY THE SHOW SHOULD GO as some fans do. Avoiding that kind of thinking is why I largely avoid Gateworld and communities other than pure fic communities. But this was crossing the line, for me.

grumble, grumble, grumble.

*icon shows what kind of show I would have rather had.
