beatrice_otter: Torchwood team with crime scene tape (Torchwood)
I just read the excellent post-Children Of Earth story The Time Traveler's Daughter by [personal profile] speedgeek, and was reminded of a post-COE story I have bits of in my head that I'm never going to write.  So here the synopsis is, for your amusement.

A while after COE (fifty years?  A hundred? idk) some nasty people want info out of Jack Harkness for some reason.  They torture him, but he's been tortured by the best, and doesn't break, and then take him back to Earth, and throw a bunch of random people in with him and start torturing them to get Jack to give them what he wants, and he's like, I'm sorry these people are hurting, I wish I could stop it, but why do you think that saving them will be more important to me than saving myself?  Turns out they're all descendents of his--a century on Earth, most of it before reliable birth control, Steven wasn't the only one.

Anyway, it's never getting written, but there it is.

beatrice_otter: 1633--knight and ironclad (1633)
One is an alternate history of the US and Great Britain.  The UK retains political control over the Colonies by sacrificing economic control (i.e. they reduce taxation, and the Colonies don't rebel, possibly with grants of nobility thrown in to various colonial elite and younger sons of nobles from England who are willing to emigrate).  With economic affairs largely in control of Americans, economic growth grows roughly the same as it did in our time line, but since we're still part of the UK there's a much higher percentage of British elite investing in factories and plantations and things as they become really profitable, and American elites becoming tied in there.  By the end of the 19th Century America is the economic powerhouse of the British Empire, and Queen Victoria moves the capital to America to keep a better eye on us and to cement our position in the Empire.  (Before you scoff, remember that when Rome finally fell to the barbarians for the last time, Rome hadn't been the capital of the Roman Empire for several centuries, Constantine the Great having moved the capital to a small town in Turkey called Byzantium which he rebuilt and expanded and renamed Constantinople, which is modern-day Istanbul.)  What does that do to colonialism in general?  In the 19th Century, the European nations went all-out conquering Africa and Asia; if Great Britain's focus was on America instead of India and China, what would be different?  And how would the political situation in Europe change if the UK was focused more on Spain and Mexico than France and Germany and Russia?

Another is a futurefic about Jack Harkness getting therapy to get the inside of his head fixed.  Something like, if he could kill himself, he would, but he's going to be around for a long time and he's been wallowing in angst and obsessions for so long and he's tired of it and he doesn't want to have to worry about hurting people he cares about by accident because he's a self-absorbed wanker any more.  Because I love him, but I am firmly of the opinion that a good therapist is worth zir weight in gold, and boy does Jack need it.

All in all, depressing as it is, I thought it was very well done, both in writing and acting, except for one or two things. )
Aside from those three things, though, it was a very well-written script from a technical point of view, and very well done.

So, this year I wrote not one but two fics, both Torchwood: Knocking at the Door (the Things Unspoken Remix) and Hard to Swallow (the Percolation Remix). They're not exactly a pair, but they do complement each other. They have to do with Jack Harkness and Ianto Jones, respectively, and their early days at Torchwood, learning to deal with (or really, not deal with) their lives before this point. For Jack, it's about being abandoned by the Doctor and Rose, and all the abandonment issues and other issues he already had at that point compounding on one another. For Ianto, it's about surviving the destruction of Torchwood One and Lisa's conversion. Both of them are trying desperately to ignore their issues and go on as if nothing's wrong. And, of course, Torchwood isn't helping.

I was spoiled for choice this year; my remixee, [livejournal.com profile] glinda_penguin, has a lot of stories in three fandoms I write (SG-1, Doctor Who, Torchwood). And while the earlier stories from when she was starting out aren't very good (as she admits herself), well, sometimes that leaves more doors for remixing than wonderfully written stories do. Not only did she have a lot of stories to choose from, I had a whole list of her stories jump out at me as having great possibilities for a remix. Even with a tight writing schedule, it was easy to pick one (Unspeakable Lists) and remix it.  The story was about Jack keeping lists of questions to ask the Doctor when he finds him again, and naturally I wanted to know what questions were on the list, so I wrote it.  But it was only just over 1,000  words long, barely over the minimum,  and I just felt like maybe I should do something more for my remixee, and I had the time, so I thought I would do another one.  And it would be nice if it related, so I went to one of the other Torchwood fics that had caught my eye--a humorous ficlet about Ianto's love affair with coffee.  Which caught my eye because you know as an American, I'd always thought that Brits were all tea-drinkers.  So how Ianto became a coffee drinker might be an interesting story, particularly if you intertwined it with how he came to Torchwood Three, and then it would complement my first story.  It turned out to be longer, but no harder to write; like the first, it pretty much wrote itself.
