beatrice_otter: Sam and Teal'c (Sam and Teal'c)
The story I was scrambling to get a beta for?  The deadline got extended!  For everyone!  Apparently, multiple people had contacted the mods saying they had a story mostly done but it wouldn't be done on time, and one of the mods was having computer trouble such that they can't get their FINISHED story off the hard-drive, and so they said, screw it, we're moving the deadline back a month.

On the one hand: Yes!  This story is one of those which I have occasionally, in which it is just going to go on for a while and even if I know where the ending is going to be (I do now, thanks to excellent betaing from [personal profile] tielan and [personal profile] princessofgeeks) it's not going to get there without many thousands of words in the middle.  Like, no, no shortcuts, either you write all this other stuff or you don't write anything, even if you know the ending you will not be able to write it until all the other stuff your hindbrain wants to put in have been exhausted.  So, having the extra time to get it done is good.

On the other hand, I had staggered my ficathons so I could finish up [community profile] stargate_summer and then concentrate on my [community profile] ssrconfidential fic.  And now ... I will have to be working on both at the same time.  Aaaargh.

  • It's like 11k words (now, but it's not finished),
  • it's Teal'c-and-Daniel focused stranded-fic,
  • it has two possible endings and I'm not sure which to go by,
  • the thematic/stylistic stuff I'm trying to put in to get it to match the tone of the artwork is NOT WORKING,
  • it's due on the 30th (though it won't be revealed until a week later so if I can bang out a finished draft, post it on the 30th, I should have time to actually whip it into shape by the time it's revealed.)

HALP PLEASE

beatrice_otter: Sam and Teal'c (Sam and Teal'c)
I'm like halfway done with my Stargate Reverse Bang fic (due in a week, omg I am so panicking), and I just realized I have a MAJOR CANON PROBLEM.  There was no time when a) Teal'c had a prim'ta, b) the SGC had reliable access to their own interstellar ships, and c) Daniel Jackson was on the team.  And for the plot to work as it is designed, I sort of need all three?  Like, Daniel and Teal'c are stranded for a while (longer than Teal'c would reasonably have tretonin supplies for) and the SGC needs to be able to come find them.

I suppose I could set it in, like, season 5 and have the SGC get ahold of Bra'tac?  He is more reliable than the Tok'ra, at any rate.

This is what I get for trying to write a story for a show I once knew encyclopedically but haven't watched in a while.

So, you guys remember my Criminal Minds/SG-1 fic that I asked for help with a while back?  It's in the home stretches, which, yay!

The problem is that I haven't actually watched CM in several seasons.  Like, I watched it religiously for years, and then after the whole shenanigans with Prentiss "dying" and coming back I kind of drifted away?  And I figured, this fic, which has been a WIP since before that point (and a plot bunny before that) could just be set sometime in those first seven seasons or so, and so then I wouldn't have to worry about it.  Or I just didn't have to mention what season it was set; after all, the only BAU characters who appear on-screen for more than a few lines are Derek and Rossi and Garcia, and it's a casefic (so few personal details are shared), so one could imagine it taking place at any season since Rossi joined the team, right?

And I suppose I could still do that!  But.  I just found out that Derek is now married with a baby son at home.  And I think that's AWESOME, showing a black action-hero character who often gets stereotyped as the "angry black man" as a family guy.  And having a family at home would make the kidfic aspects of the story resonate throughout, rather than feeling (as now) tacked on at the end.  It would tie things in nicely.  Only problem is ... like I said, I haven't watched the show in YEARS, I'd never even HEARD about this character until today, in order to write her I'd have to watch the episodes she's in, it would probably add quite a few thousand words to the story (which I thought was in the home stretch!).  AND THE ROUGH DRAFT IS DUE NEXT SUNDAY.  (This fic is for [community profile] wipbigbang )

HALP, WHAT DO I DO?!?!?!?

ETA: Have watched the Savannah Hayes eps available on Netflix, which only has CM through season 10.  Alas, the critical eps--"Derek," "The Sandman," and "A Beautiful Disaster," are not available anywhere free that I can find.  I mean, I could pay the $3/episode to buy them on Amazon.com, but I don't want the eps in and of themselves.  Especially not "The Sandman," which seems to just have one or two short scenes with her in them.  And "A Beautiful Disaster" she's in the hospital in labor.  "Derek" has a long hallucination from Derek about their relationship, which might be worth it, though.

beatrice_otter: Stargate--My fandom has Space Pyramids! (Space Pyramids!)
... when a loved fic author who gafiated years ago with many WIPs posts to their LJ saying they're back and writing fic again!

It's awesome!

In this case, thank you, [livejournal.com profile] sgcbearcub for many hours of fun reading, and hopefully more to come!

(Now, the bad news is that they say they're probably not going to work on any of their Stargate WIPs in the forseeable future, but still.  The others will be nice.)

For those of you who don't know them (because they've been quiet for years and even way back when they weren't exactly a BNF), [livejournal.com profile] sgcbearcub wrote X-Files, SG-1 (Sam/Jack), Harry Potter, Labyrinth, and I think a few others.  Long, plotty stories.  Most notable for me, they wrote my favorite clone!jack (in this case clone!team) stories ever, a trilogy: Monkey Screaming, Mirror Image, and Silk and Chains.  (Actually, going back and rereading it, mostly the snowcamping trip in Mirror Image chapters 8-10 and all the competence!porn that is Silk and Chains.)

You can find their fic at the Pit of Voles [fanfiction.net profile] SGCbearcub, and a few other odds and ends at an old website. (And ISTR that at one point there was also the beginning of a really interesting Tok'ra-fic on some webboard somewhere, but I imagine that's lost in the mists of time--I think it was about creating a new Tok'ra Queen after Egeria died?  And somehow Jack and Sam were ending up as hosts?  And possibly seceding from Earth?  I thought that one was a Bearcub fic, but I could be wrong--and anyway, it's probably lost to the mists of time.)

Thanks for all the great fic, thanks for coming back to finish at least some of it, and best wishes as you try to make the jump to profic!

So I have a Criminal Minds/SG-1 fic I'm writing, and there's a case, and I need the Criminal Minds characters read into (at least a tiny bit of) the Stargate Program because Plot.

Why, that is easy! you say.  Have the SGC need the BAU to do a profile!  Except that, in the story as written, all the SGC needs is the case file.  Once they have that, they can look through properties belonging to corporations and people suspected of Trust ties until they find the right one.  And, in canon, they just call up to their friends in the White House and the FBI/Police/ATF/Whoever has to bend and spread 'em.  I need something more involved where, to find the Trust base, they need BAU help.

I would love someone to read what I've got and suggest ideas, or even just bounce ideas here on DW.

The story as written. )

Longest Story: Consequences, a 46k word SG-1 AU I wrote in 2005 because I was annoyed at all the Broca-AUs and thought I could do it better.  Turns out, this is not the greatest reason to write a story, and by the end of it I hated it.  And the sequel shows it, because it ends WAY too abruptly and I still occasionally get people wanting to know if I'm going to actually FINISH it and my response is, I know this is a crappy ending, but it's the best you're getting.  (For those of you too young to know SG-1 or who were never in the fandom, The Broca Divide was like the third ep of the first season, and the SGC gets a virus that turns people into cave-men and Sam tries to seduce Jack before she gets carted off to the infirmary.  There were a lot of really bad fics that used this as a jumping point for really OOC floof.)
Shortest Story: Well, I have a lot of drabbles as mentioned earlier, but AO3 thinks they're all part of one story because that's how I posted them.  The two monofannish drabbles are posted each as their own story, so those are what AO3 thinks are the shortest.  "In Another Life" and "Blood Will Tell."  And when I say "drabble," I mean a REAL drabble, 100 words exactly.  None of this newfangled "any really short story" nonsense, goldern kids get off my lawn ...

Fandom, you have fallen down on the job!  This is one of the most awesome crossovers I've ever read, why has it not been recced everywhere so that I can see it?  The story is good, it's well-written, but the incredibly awesome thing is the worldbuilding.  This story has some of the most awesome meta I've ever seen about religion, its place in the SG universe, and what it means to be Immortal in the Highlander sense.  All told within a wonderfully engaging story.  It sent me to my flappy happy place so many times.  Go read it!

Yesterday, I added like 10k words to the Criminal Minds/Stargate fic I’ve had as a WIP for the last few years.

…9k or those words weren’t actually new, they were from a scene that didn’t work as-written because I was missing several crucial scenes that formed a plot hole.  So I had to take out most of what I had and do something different with the setup plot, and after a couple years of writing a few hundred words a month on it, finally got to a place where I realized I could just c&p most of the stuff that had to get taken out, it works again now!  Different context and setting, but it works!

beatrice_otter: Delenn--We are Starstuff (Starstuff)
[personal profile] laurajv asks: What's your favorite character, from any media, and why?

And the problem with this is the same problem I have with any "what's your favorite?" question, and that is that I've never had any one book or character or movie or anything that I could point to and go "this one is my favorite."  Even if you narrow it down, so it's "what's your favorite character on a particular show?" I almost always go, "well, that depends on my mood."  My fannish affections are extremely poly; I've never had anything resembling an OTP or OTC.  I mean, I have pairings that I like (I'd never choose to pair Luke Skywalker and Mara Jade with anyone else, nor Han and Leia with anyone but each other), but it's not a strong enough thing to go THEY CAN'T EVER BE WITH ANYONE ELSE.  Like, if someone wrote an interesting, well-written story with no character bashing where one of those two pairs broke up or never got together in the first place, I'd read it and enjoy it.  (Well.  Let me clarify that.  If you were going to pair Luke with Callista, you would have to re-write the end of Children of the Jedi so that she didn't end up in Cray's body, because that really, really weirds me out.  Like, ew, and then after that she went off the rails in the other two books she appeared in, but if she weren't in Cray's body to begin with those other books would be different, so.)  But my favorite Star Wars characters are probably Corran Horn and Mara Jade, if you take all things together.  (But then there's Thrawn!  Pelleon!  Padme!  Winter!)

Star Trek characters, well, Saavik and Spock for classic trek, everyone on DS9, B'Elanna Torres and Tuvok on Voyager, Trip and T'Pol on Enterprise, TNG I can't pick favorites, and TOS everyone but Kirk.  (He's too much of a fratboy.  They took out all the character's good points and exaggerated his bad ones.)

Babylon 5, um.  HOW CAN ONE PICK FAVORITES?  They're all awesome!  I start off with Delenn and Lennier, but then would I put them as more beloved than Londo and G'Kar?  And Vir and Na'Toth and Susan and Marcus?  Er.  Well, no.  I mean, my favorite culture to do worldbuilding with is definitely the Minbari which would normally dictate what characters I want to write about.  (Boy, howdy, does that happen with Star Trek.)  But I love Londo and G'Kar and Vir and Na'toth and all the rest so much I love to write them too even if their culture is less interesting to poke around in ...

Battlestar Galactica, I love me some Cylons.  Love 'em, love to hate 'em.  Particularly the Final Five.  And then there's Bill and Laura, love them!  Billy!  Felix!  Lee and Kara annoy me separately and together, but mostly because the show focused on them.  Like, Kara was not the only screwed up person in that fleet.  Neither was Lee.  And the last season and a half there were so many stretches that were all about their issues when I wanted to know what was happening to all the other characters that I love, but we didn't get it because we had to get Yet Another Go-Around on the Lee and Kara show.  (Or the Lee's Daddy Issues show.  Or the Kara is Messed Up Because Life Done Her Wrong show.  And I appreciated in the abstract how rare it is for a heroine to be allowed the kind of damage that Kara was while still being a hero, and it's rare for a heroine to have a Traumatic Backstory not involving rape (I mean, the messed up stalker guy who may/may not have raped her in that creepy New Caprica apartment came long after Kara was screwed up by her mother's abuse, it was a complicating factor not THE REASON FOR EVERYTHING), but still, it was too much for my taste.)

Once Upon a Time.  I ship Belle/Rumple but I'm glad she kicked him out--that's what I like about that pairing, that she's the kind of person who would do that if she had to, they love one another but Twu Wuv doesn't conquer all, and I have been so worried since the beginning that they would try to paper over the ethical issues inherent in that relationship and go "it doesn't matter that he's evil because she loves him!"  So I can't read much fic in that pairing because most of the fic tends to be in that vein.  I hate, loathe, and despise Hook with the passion of a thousand burning suns.  I love Emma, Regina, Neal (I miss Neal!) ...those three are actually probably my favorites on the show, and my favorite character that doesn't get enough love is definitely Neal.  (I mean, I prefer Emma with Neal than anybody else, but like I said I'm not really an OTP type person, and there's a lot of gen Emma and Swan Queen both, and lots of Outlaw Queen as well, to give my my Emma and Regina fixes.  Not much Neal at all.)  Other than that, Mulan and Aurora had so much potential, sigh.

MCU, my favorites are (in no particular order) Peggy, Sam, and Steve.  My favorite character there that fandom that fandom doesn't much care about is Maria Hill.  I believe in Jasper Sitwell.

Doctor Who!  Eleven is my favorite doctor, but Martha and Donna are my favorite companions.  I loved early!River, before she was ruined by making EVERY SINGLE THING IN HER ENTIRE LIFE EVER ABOUT THE DOCTOR AND SHE'LL DO INCREDIBLY SELF-DESTRUCTIVE THINGS BECAUSE OF HIM AND HIDE IT FROM HIM SO HE DOESN'T FEEL BAD.  Gah.  I don't have enough time watching Classic Who to have informed opinions there.  I like Rose as seen on the show, but get really annoyed by Rose as seen by fandom, where SHE IS THE ONE TRUE COMPANION AND EVERYTHING IS ALWAYS ABOUT HER AND THE DOCTOR GETTING TOGETHER AND/OR STAYING TOGETHER AND HE COULD NEVER CARE ABOUT ANY OTHER COMPANION THE WAY HE CARES FOR HER.  Because of this I rarely read any fanfic in which Rose occurs.

Stargate: Sam and Teal'c and Sha're and Hammond are probably my favorites, but I love them all.  And I was never into SGA enough to really have favorites, as such.  It was okay, and I think I saw every ep at least once, but eh.  I read a lot of McShep because there was a lot of it, but the two of them, separately and together, are my least favorite characters on the show.  It's not that I dislike them, but, look, they were the most formulaic and least interesting.

Terminator, I love Sarah Connor and Catherine Weaver and James Ellison and John Henry and Cameron and Jesse and ... look, the Sarah Connor Chronicles are definitely my favorite part of that franchise, and I love almost everything about that show except that it wasn't longer.

Vorkosiverse, again, there's nobody that I don't absolutely love.  Ivan, Simon, Alys, and Elli are the only major characters that I don't think I would ever say is my favorite.  All the rest, yeah, at different times and in different moods I would choose different ones from among them as my favorite.

beatrice_otter: Cameron Mitchell, bored with a stack of files (Schoolwork)

beatrice_otter: Jack O'Neill in an alien prison--one of those days. (One of Those Days)
Tonight I was struck by the SG-1 urge, and pulled out my DVDs.  Going through the early seasons, the episode to catch my fancy was A Matter Of Time, where the SGC accidentally connects to a Stargate on a planet being devoured by a black hole.  The Stargate won't disconnect because the temporal distortion of the black hole has a weird effect on the wormhole, which also causes disruption in the SGC as time slows down the closer you get to the Stargate.  Anyway, the solution is to focus a powerful explosion right at the Stargate to force the wormhole to "jump" to another Stargate, thus breaking the connection with the black hole planet.  Because of time differentials they can't just set the bomb remotely, someone has to go with it--and because of the black hole's gravity, by this point the Stargate is "down" in that it has much more gravity than the planet does.  So O'Neill and Random Redshirted Colonel get "lowered" from the control room on ropes to the middle of the gateroom, because with the wormholes gravity, they are "hanging" parallel to the ground.

This is the scene that, on the DVD menu, provides the picture for the episode.  Except that the picture is oriented so that O'Neill and Random Redshirted Colonel are oriented right-side-up, as if they are hanging down from the ceiling instead of sideways from the wall.

Think horses not zebras, I get it, when you see people dangling from ropes you expect gravity to be going up and down, not side-to-side.  But this is SF, so maybe they should have checked?  Or maybe had someone who actually knew the show work on such things?

Hey, for all you Stargate fans out there, do we ever learn anything about General Hammond's faith/religion?

If we don't, what Christian groups are a) popular in Texas and b) do Ash Wednesday services?  I mean, I know Lutherans, Catholics, and Episcopalians celebrate Ash Wednesday, but none of them are particularly big among white people in Texas that I know of.
