beatrice_otter: Maria Hill (Maria Hill)
Hey guys, if you haven't checked out the fic written for [livejournal.com profile] rarewomen yet, you should, because there is tons of really good fic.
beatrice_otter: Counselor Troi and Amy Pond, with the Enterprise-D in the background. (Crossover--Troi and Pond)
I'm going off to a training retreat, will be back Wednesday, may or may not have internet.  So if my [livejournal.com profile] xover_xchange fic is posted in that time, I don't know when I'll be able to read it.
beatrice_otter: Babylon 5--Vir waving (Vir's wave)
My last and quickest-written Yuletide fic, another treat.  And the one that got far and away the most comments!  I guess people really love Timov.

Title: The Price of a Favor
Fandom: Babylon 5
Word Count:  1922 words
Written For: [personal profile] amatara
Summary: All Timov wants to do is live quietly. With Cartagia on the throne, that may not be an option.

( When rumors began to spread about Cartagia's madness, Timov discounted them. )
beatrice_otter: My home is not a place, it is people, sir. (Home is People)
My second Yuletide fic of the year, this is the first Enchanted Forrest fic I've ever written.  I wrote it as a treat a day or so before the deadline; I had to re-read the last Enchanted Forrest book, but that was no hardship ;)

Title: In Which Daystar Learns Magic and Asks A Question
Fandom: Enchanted Forrest Chronicles
Word Count:  1891 words
Written For: [archiveofourown.org profile] silencedancer
Summary: A little vignette set immediately post-Talking To Dragons

( The castle was large, and impressive, and didn't feel at all like home. By the time he'd been lost five times (which only took until noon, the day after the battle), Daystar would have liked very much to go back to the cabin he was raised in. )

beatrice_otter: Yuletide (Yuletide)
... the title is currently "need to find title before reveal."  Also it needs to be betaed.  But hey, it counts, right?
beatrice_otter: Yuletide (Yuletide)
Crap.

Yuletide only allows you to nominate three fandoms, but you can request four.  Once the nomination form is accepted, it cannot be changed.  And it doesn't tell you if something has already been accepted before you submit.  So if you have four different fandoms you would like to request fic in, and nobody else nominates one of them, you are SOL.  Or if you, like me, want three desperately and have one or two others that would be really cool, you ask for the three you most desperately want and hope someone else nominates one of the others--unless you know that someone else has or will request one of your three top fandoms, leaving you with a slot to request one of your second tier fandoms.

On the spreadsheet run by volunteers based on what people report has been accepted, Batman Beyond hadn't been accepted yet.  So I put it as one of my three nomination fandoms (along with Donovan's Reef and Temeraire).  It's already been accepted, all but one character I nominated, so obviously someone else nominated it.  If I'd known that, I would have nominated either Bride and Prejudice or The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress.

I mean, come on, I get that generating a constantly updating list of everything that has been requested so far would be way to server-intensive, and therefore impractical.  But how much server load would it take to have an asterisk or pop up or something when you enter in a fandom or character that has already been added to the Yuletide tag set?

If anyone has any spare noms, please nominate one or both of those fandoms!  You can nominate without needing to participate in Yuletide itself!  All you need is an AO3 account.  (And, by the way, if you are waiting for an AO3 account, you will automatically get one now if you want to participate in Yuletide.)  Nomination FormTutorial.

Bride and Prejudice
1. Lalita
2. Darcy
3. Balraj
4. Jaya

Heinlein--The Moon is a Harsh Mistress
1. Mike
2. Manny
3. Wyoh
4. ________________ (if you're not familiar with the canon, Professor de la Paz would probably be a good fourth person to nominate)

Free To Choose.  Her memories define who she is, her choices define who she will be.  (Sharon Agathon)

Buffy
As a Queen, Sufficient.  Kendra, debriefing after her first trip to Sunnydale.

A Ladies' Day Out.  The impact of unregulated collection on the draconic biodiversity of the greater Ankh-Morpork region by Vimes (née Ramkin), S. Presented to the Ankh-Morpork Dragon Fanciers Society, Grune, Year of the Reversed Ptarmigan.  Hypothesis: poachers can be firmly deterred by a gumboot to the ear and some stern words, by Jove.  (Sybil Ramkin, the Emmas, Sacharissa Cripslock)

Doctor Who
Human Behavior.  The TARDIS learned a lot from her time in a human body; that doesn't mean she knows how to put a human together again.  (Idris, Tardis)
Cold Hands, Warm Heart.  Jenny finds a Silurian warrior behind the house. Then she puts the kettle on.  One of the Jenny&Vastra stories I have been craving.

Star Trek TNG
Shadow-walking.  Ro Laren and Deanna Troi undertake a secret mission on a matriarchal world.

Vorkosigan Saga
Five Strays Elizabeth Naismith took in (and One That Got Away).  Dear Cordelia, I'm sure I don't need to tell you that Miles is a charming and intelligent young man; I've been enjoying his company immensely. He's made plenty of friends, and taken to the social opportunities at school with a great deal of verve. (For more details, please see the attached disciplinary reports from Principal Hatter.)

X-Men First Class
A Piece of Her Mind.  Agent MacTaggert really shouldn't be in this cocktail bar. And she really shouldn't be talking to two wanted criminals. But they seem to think there's a way for her to get back the memories she'd lost the previous year, and she can't help but listen.  (Moira, Angel, Mystique)

Chess

beatrice_otter: Uhura and Uhura Prime (Too awesome for one timeline)
Anybody got any chess-for-beginners primers they could recommend that would help me understand the subtleties of the game at least well enough to write a fic with it?  Because I just signed up for and got the most stylishly awesome piece of art at [livejournal.com profile] trekreversebang this year, and it's Pike, Spock, Kirk, and Uhura against a background of a chess board and pieces.  So I'm thinking I should know something about chess to write this.

Other ficathons: [livejournal.com profile] bsg_remix  is done, and Remix Redux is coming along nicely.  Anyone want to beta 30k words of BSG AU on short notice, or about 10k words of SG-1 on slightly less short notice?

beatrice_otter: Sarah Connor kicks ass--made for me, not shareable (Sarah Connor kicks ass)
All of a sudden, I'm in a very ficathony mood.  I just signed up for [livejournal.com profile] bsg_remix , signed up for [livejournal.com profile] rarewomen last night, have some plot bunnies waiting to get out for Winterfair at [livejournal.com profile] bujold_fic , and am contemplating seeing if I can do [livejournal.com profile] heroinebigbang .  I've only ever completed one big bang, because I've had to drop out, because usually my long stories end up needing to percolate in my hindbrain for months at a time while they're halfway done.  But.  [livejournal.com profile] heroinebigbang is multifandom, so I can choose what character and plot bunny I want, and the signups end the day the rough drafts are due.  So instead of signing up and having to back out halfway through and being embarrassed, I can start writing and see if it's going to happen, and if it doesn't, I don't feel like I've let anyone down.  And maybe if it doesn't work out for next year, I'll have it ready to go by next year's big bang.

On a less fun note, there is a child care center attached to the place where I work.  When they have a crunch, I (being low person on the totem pole) am the one who gets pulled in.  Leaving work today, I got told they have had some people out sick and such and have had to do some reshuffling, and so I need to work there 7:30am-10:00am and 3:00-5:00.  Oh, joy.  Still, playing with kids, not the worst job in the world.

beatrice_otter: Uhura fights like a girl (Fight like a Girl)
I'm signing up for [livejournal.com profile] rarewomen and it was tough!  You only get three fandoms (up to five women per fandom), and I really really wanted a fourth--New Who, with Jenny (The Doctor's Daughter), Idris, Liz X, and Joan Redfern as my character picks.  But, alas, it was not to be, and I chose BSG, SG-1, and TNG as my fandoms not necessarily because I wanted to see those more than New Who, but because New Who is bigger and so I have a better chance of getting fic for those people outside this ficathon than I do the ones I picked.

beatrice_otter: Giles says "The subtext is rapidly becoming ... text" (Subtext)
I received Quiet is the Steep Stair Under, by [livejournal.com profile] minarchy .  I asked for women being awesome, and she delivered.  Doctor Who/X-Men, starring Mystique, River, and Rogue.  In the High Security Unit of the Stormcage Containment Facility, Erik Lehnsherr has a visitor.

I wrote Reflections in Moving Water for [livejournal.com profile] liliaeth. At 17.7k words, it is slightly more epic than I thought it would be, but I'm happy with it.  Criminal Minds/X-men/X-men First Class starring David Rossi (and Hotch, Morgan, Reid, Magneto, Professor Xavier, and Hank "Beast" McCoy).  Gen, PG-13
Warnings: period-accurate (1960s) use of racial slurs.
A/N: Thank you to [info]perdiccas for the beta
Summary: When the BAU is ordered to update the profiles on the Brotherhood of Mutants, Rossi must revisit a past he doesn't talk about.

There are many other good stories, so if crossovers are your thing, check it out!

beatrice_otter: Plot Bunny Princess (Plot Bunny Princess)
Um.  So, remember that I gave up on my [livejournal.com profile] xover_exchange story because it was going to be too long to get it finished in time, and started a new story?  Well, I might have ended up writing less if I'd just stuck with it.  I don't know if I've ever written that much in that short a time.

It's a good story.  I like it.  It was fun to write.  I think my recipient will like it better than the original story.  It just ... kind of came out of nowhere.

beatrice_otter: Yuletide (Yuletide)
So, I got my assignment, and clicked it with the trepidation of Yuletide, where one never knows what one will get.

I read the first request.  My response: huh, I didn't think I signed up to write that, but maybe I did?  I'd have to reread some stuff, but that's doable ...

I read the second request.  Definitely not matched on it.

I read the third request.  My response: huh, I didn't think I signed up to write that, but maybe I did?  I'd have to reread some stuff, but that's doable ...

I read the fourth request.  I knew I signed up for that one, so that must be what we're matched on.

But I've never shared three of four fandoms with someone!  This is awesome.  I may have to friend zir when [community profile] yuletide is over, because we evidently share much in common.  And it's not like these are movies that are on TV all the time.  Like, I had a request a couple of years ago where we matched on one, but zie also requested Forrest Gump which I don't think I've ever watched straight through but has been on TV so much I've seen every part of it at least twice, so I knew I could write it if I had to.  That's the closest I've ever matched someone.

From reading zir Yulegoat letter, it's clear which fandom zir heart is truly hoping for.  And it's one we share (sort of), though not the one we matched on.  I have the books.  I haven't read them in years, but I have them easily accessible.  And she's right, there really isn't an online fandom for them, and she only just discovered them and is still in that first blush of "oh, wow, I love these books!", and ... I read fast enough that I should be able to read the whole series as a refresher and still crank out a story by December 25th.  There are only, what, five books?  Something like that?  In two volumes?  And I can skip right through all the battle/tech scenes, because I wouldn't write about them anyway and zie didn't ask for them anyway.  By the time I was in middle school I was reading a novel a day, so even though I have less free time now it shouldn't take too long.  And I still have the fandom we matched on for backup.

On other news, with five days left until rough drafts are due, I'm starting a new [livejournal.com profile] xover_exchange fic.  My first story started great guns, but then I couldn't figure out where it was going (great premise, but no idea what to do about it).  I finally know where it's going and what the punchline is going to be, but I could not finish it in five days.  I will finish it because it's a cool fic and I like it, but I need something else for the challenge.  Thankfully, the second fic I started yesterday is chugging along nicely.
beatrice_otter: Yuletide (Yuletide)
... there's never even been a Yuletide fic of it.

Yuletide Nominations Are Open!!!!!!!!!

Remember, nominations are EXTREMELY important this year!

Instead of getting six nominations (two more than you can request fic for), you get only THREE.  So instead of people nominating what they'd like to receive with a couple extra just for fun and to see if anyone else would like it too, a great many people are left with fewer nominations than they will be requesting fic for.  Since there half as many nominations per person, you cannot count on someone else just happening to nominate something you want to request, as well.    And only being able to nominate 4 characters makes it even worse.

So!  Here is the post where people have been listing what they will nominate, and horsetrading the details, and here is the googledocs spreadsheet of it.  Check there to see if someone is planning to request one or more of your fandoms.  Note that there is also a column for fandoms people request others to nominate because they don't have the slots themselves.  This is because you can request fic in four fandoms, but can only nominate three, so there are people who want to request four but will otherwise not be able to.  If you have extra nomination slots, please be kind and nominate something for someone else who has already used up their slots.

And here is the post of what has already been nominated, and its googledocs spreadsheet, noting as fandoms and characters are approved or rejected by the mods.

nominations run through Monday at 9PM Eastern.

Go nominate!

beatrice_otter: Aim high--you may still miss the target, but at least you won't shoot your foot off. (Aim High)
I'm writing a story for [livejournal.com profile] oc_bigbang, and that means I get art made for me.  Yay!  And it looks like I'll get the rough draft done on time, even bigger yay!  When I signed up, they asked if I had a particular actress in mind for my OC, Tora Manar.

Well.  That's a problem for me.  I have face blindness; recognizing faces is difficult for me, and so visual cues aren't at all what I write from.  I mean, even when I'm writing characters from a TV show or movie where they already have actors that I have seen many times I don't really picture them at all when I'm writing (or reading) fic.  But, you know, I thought I'd try, which has led me to a frustrating half-hour with Google Image search.  I don't want Manar to be supermodel-gorgeous; just kind of normal-looking is fine with me.  Because she is a kind of Bajoran-girl-next-door who survived the Occupation and the camps and wants to rebuild Bajor and make a better life for herself and her family.  Fairly ordinary, glass-half-full type.  One of my inspirations, back when I thought this was a romance instead of a gen story, was Lalita from Bride and Prejudice, played by Aishwarya Rai.  Now that I know it's a gen story, Lalita's refusal to accept patronization from the privileged people is still a contributor to Manar, although Manar is much less likely to point it out unless it's really big.  She's trying for a career as a Starfleet officer, she's trying to blend in and get accepted and so she's got a lot more incentive to bite her tongue.  But, you know, Aishwarya definitely has supermodel good looks that I don't want Manar to have.  But that got me started with Bollywood actresses (and also, it annoyed me that while we occasionally saw Bajorans of color in the background, I can't think of a single ep that had one with an actual speaking role), and from there several other searches, and here's what I've found.

Vega Tamotia seems to have a good face; pretty enough, but not hubba-hubba.  But her skin is a bit lighter than I described Manar's skin as being.
Karthika Nair is a bit closer, but I'm not quite sure about for some reason--maybe it's her expression in most of those pictures, she looks a bit too cynical or something.  This is Star Trek after all, and so Manar has a bit of that optimistic/Pollyannaish quality that infuses most of the Star Trek universe.
Rula Jebreal is wonderful, but a tiny bit too close to the too-gorgeous, and also possibly slightly darker than I described Manar.

Now, I've never seen any of these women act (nor read Rula's books nor seen her TV show), so this is going strictly off of pictures.  What do you guys think?  Any suggestions?

(The other main character is a Vulcan male, in that indeterminate middle age Vulcans have where they look thirty and could be anywhere from 30 to 100 years old.  He may be distantly related to Spock and to Ambassador Soval from Enterprise, with whom he shares a name.  I don't really care about what he looks like; there are thousands of white actors in the right age range to choose from, and there are probably quite a few who could do appropriate Vulcan dignity.  Besides, it's not Soval's story, it's Manar's.  He's got his own internal life, but we only ever really see glimpses of it.)
