[personal profile] ellen_fremedon has started a meme, which is terribly dangerous but too tempting for me to ignore, so here:

Let's play the Hypothetical Crossover game! Name any two (or more) fandoms you know I'm familiar with*, and I will tell you how I would, hypothetically**, cross them over!

Take the meme, spread the meme, do the meme, love the meme.

*Fandoms I'm familiar with: written on AO3 (expand full list), tagged on DW, or bookmarked on Delicious.  (Yes, I know, I plan to switch to Pinboard eventually.  Today is not that day.)

In other news, I had a job interview that went rather well, yesterday.  Good bits: I would have time to go back to school and work towards my doctorate, it seems like I would be working with good people, and it comes with a nice four-bedroom house (with a garage, very necessary in that part of the world) from which I can walk to work.  Bad bits: it is in Minnesota, i.e. half a continent away from either a) my home (West Coast) or b) the place where most of my friends are now (East Coast).  Minnesota also gets very cold, which I can tolerate but don't like.

I received Quiet is the Steep Stair Under, by [livejournal.com profile] minarchy .  I asked for women being awesome, and she delivered.  Doctor Who/X-Men, starring Mystique, River, and Rogue.  In the High Security Unit of the Stormcage Containment Facility, Erik Lehnsherr has a visitor.

I wrote Reflections in Moving Water for [livejournal.com profile] liliaeth. At 17.7k words, it is slightly more epic than I thought it would be, but I'm happy with it.  Criminal Minds/X-men/X-men First Class starring David Rossi (and Hotch, Morgan, Reid, Magneto, Professor Xavier, and Hank "Beast" McCoy).  Gen, PG-13
Warnings: period-accurate (1960s) use of racial slurs.

beatrice_otter: Plot Bunny Princess (Plot Bunny Princess)
Um.  So, remember that I gave up on my [livejournal.com profile] xover_exchange story because it was going to be too long to get it finished in time, and started a new story?  Well, I might have ended up writing less if I'd just stuck with it.  I don't know if I've ever written that much in that short a time.

It's a good story.  I like it.  It was fun to write.  I think my recipient will like it better than the original story.  It just ... kind of came out of nowhere.

beatrice_otter: Yuletide (Yuletide)
So, I got my assignment, and clicked it with the trepidation of Yuletide, where one never knows what one will get.

I read the first request.  My response: huh, I didn't think I signed up to write that, but maybe I did?  I'd have to reread some stuff, but that's doable ...

I read the second request.  Definitely not matched on it.

I read the third request.  My response: huh, I didn't think I signed up to write that, but maybe I did?  I'd have to reread some stuff, but that's doable ...

I read the fourth request.  I knew I signed up for that one, so that must be what we're matched on.

But I've never shared three of four fandoms with someone!  This is awesome.  I may have to friend zir when [community profile] yuletide is over, because we evidently share much in common.  And it's not like these are movies that are on TV all the time.  Like, I had a request a couple of years ago where we matched on one, but zie also requested Forrest Gump which I don't think I've ever watched straight through but has been on TV so much I've seen every part of it at least twice, so I knew I could write it if I had to.  That's the closest I've ever matched someone.

From reading zir Yulegoat letter, it's clear which fandom zir heart is truly hoping for.  And it's one we share (sort of), though not the one we matched on.  I have the books.  I haven't read them in years, but I have them easily accessible.  And she's right, there really isn't an online fandom for them, and she only just discovered them and is still in that first blush of "oh, wow, I love these books!", and ... I read fast enough that I should be able to read the whole series as a refresher and still crank out a story by December 25th.  There are only, what, five books?  Something like that?  In two volumes?  And I can skip right through all the battle/tech scenes, because I wouldn't write about them anyway and zie didn't ask for them anyway.  By the time I was in middle school I was reading a novel a day, so even though I have less free time now it shouldn't take too long.  And I still have the fandom we matched on for backup.

On other news, with five days left until rough drafts are due, I'm starting a new [livejournal.com profile] xover_exchange fic.  My first story started great guns, but then I couldn't figure out where it was going (great premise, but no idea what to do about it).  I finally know where it's going and what the punchline is going to be, but I could not finish it in five days.  I will finish it because it's a cool fic and I like it, but I need something else for the challenge.  Thankfully, the second fic I started yesterday is chugging along nicely.
beatrice_otter: Miss Piggy in a superhero costume: Were you looking for flying pigs? (Were you looking for flying pigs?)
Esther-Channah ([livejournal.com profile] dragonbat2006) just posted a fic written for me, and it is very funny.  You all need to read it now!  An Offer He Couldn't Refuse.  It is a Batman/Muppet Show crossover.  Yes, you read that right, Batman/Muppet Show.  To say more would spoil it, but it captures the zaniness of the Muppet Show while still being true to Batman.  (Ok, maybe not Chris Nolan or Frank Miller's Batman, but still Batman.)  Go and read, you'll have fun.

(She lists the songs at the end, and if you're not familiar with them I'd recommend doing Youtube searches for them to get a feel for them beforehand, particularly 'Brush Up your Shakespeare.')

beatrice_otter: Honor Harrington with exploding spaceships (Honor Ashes of Victory)
The prompts for [community profile] multiverse5000 ([archiveofourown.org profile] multiverse_2011 ) are open for both prompting and claiming!  Even if you're not interested in writing anything, go look through the prompts because they are awesome and will give you a kick just reading the prompts.
beatrice_otter: Me in red--face not shown (Default)
I love the [community profile] multiverse5000.  I love space shows, books, and movies, and I love crossovers.  The Multiverse challenge is a crossover ficathon for space shows!  So, like Star Wars/Star Trek and Firefly/Doctor Who and BSG/B5 and Honor Harrington/Miles Vorkosigan and anything else you can think of.  It is really, really awesome, and you should all go and participate either by leaving prompts or writing fic or both.  It's being run using the new prompting feature on AO3.  Rules post is here.

Summary: While investigating Mrs Bingley’s secret, Mr Darcy receives an unwelcome shock.
Timeline Note: His Majesty’s Dragon takes place in 1805; Victory of Eagles in 1808. Pride and Prejudice takes place 1811-1812. Therefore, I’m trying to avoid war events, as I have no clue what’s going to happen next. (The real-world timeline isn’t exactly a help.) This is convenient as I suck at writing action.
Sequel to: Lieutenant Bennet's Visit

beatrice_otter: Batman with the Batsignal shining (Batman Signal)
I have to rec the fic I got from [personal profile] medie.  It's everything my little TTH drabble series wanted to be when it grew up. It is awesome.  The original is an Angel/Dark Knight crossover, where Gunn moved to Gotham and became an assistant DA who moonlights as a demon-fighter, and then Batman gets turned into an actual bat.  Gotham (the Just When You Think You're Out Remix) is about 1000x more awesome.  Kara!  Zatanna!  Stephanie Brown as a slayer!  More bat!Batman!  Demons in the ceiling!  Seriously, it's awesome, and you must read it.
beatrice_otter: Elizabeth Bennet reads (Reading)
Since my Yuletide story Lieutenant Bennet's Visit was so popular, and I've got a couple more ideas for stories in this universe which I'll be writing and I bet other people have more, I've created a Dreamwidth community ([community profile] lieutenant_bennet) and an AO3 collection.  Both are open to anyone who wants to write more stories in this 'verse.  (Or, actually, any other Austen/Temeraire crossover.  Was Lady Russell so disapproving of Captain Wentworth because he was an Aerial captain, instead of a Naval captain?  Was Admiral Crawford so uncouth because he was in the Aerial Corps?  When Napoleon invaded England did Marianne and Elinor have to defend their homes?)

Hope to see you all there!

beatrice_otter: Black and white image of Emily Prentiss from Criminal Minds, with bulletproof vest and gun. (Emily Prentiss)
My [livejournal.com profile] xover_exchange fic was finally posted (they're doing a couple a day to spread them out, and you guys, IT WAS SO WORTH THE WAIT.  I asked for a Criminal Minds/SG-1 crossover where the BAU is called in to deal with a serial killer on another planet, and [livejournal.com profile] skieswideopen delivered in spades.  I love the way she writes Emily, the main character.  I love the plot twist.  I love the moral dilemma she raises.  My only complaint is that I wish there was more of it--this is one that could have been fleshed out to excellent effect, but you know what?  It works just fine as it is, too.  (No gory details of the crime scenes, so you shouldn't have to worry about triggers.)

Evening of the Empire

beatrice_otter: Black and white image of Emily Prentiss from Criminal Minds, with bulletproof vest and gun. (Emily Prentiss)
You know how Criminal Minds is, like, always on TV?  Just now, it was on two channels at once.  One of the eps was the one where, at the end, JJ comes back and shows them Henry, and Derek goes gaga over him and the ovaries of half the women watching explode.  Now I want to have Derek Morgan kidfic.  (This is the same reaction I had the first time I saw the episode.)  But, being me, I'm not fond of kidfic of the woobie "lets throw a kid in randomly!" variety.  I like my kidfic to be well-written, with plot.  Anyway, I will probably never write CM fic for a variety of reasons, so I hereby release this plot bunny into the wild.

This plot bunny is a CM/SG-1 crossover.  In it, the Trust wants more people with the ATA gene, and so (being composed of Goa'uld, amoral businessmen and evil scientists) they decide to breed their own.  And Derek has it.  (I'm assuming that after Carson identified the gene, the US started looking for people with it, maybe doing gene screenings of government employees, which would be how the Trust finds out.)  So, they got Derek's semen by sending a female agent in to hook up with him in a bar, who went home with them and slipped out with the used condom.  Two years later, the SGC is following other leads stumble across their little breeding program--Derek not being the only one whose DNA they used--and so Major Davis makes a courtesy call to the BAU, and the team is all "why are you telling us all about this operation if you've already caught them?" and Davis turns to Derek and congrats, you're a dad! three or four times over, because of course the Trust would be using in vitro and going for multiple pregnancies as much as possible.  I'm thinking the Trust wanted to breed stronger genes by breeding two gene carriers, so they either kidnapped female gene carriers and impregnated them, or used alien tech to extract ovaries and grow the babies in artificial wombs, or maybe kidnapping female runaways/homeless women nobody would miss and impregnating them with fertilized ova.  The SGC probably cottoned on because of the assault/kidnapping of the mothers.

Anyway, I have this elaborate scenario, and no real resolution for it, which is why even if I felt like I could write CM fic, I wouldn't write this one.  But I'd love to read it!

beatrice_otter: Grammar (Grammar)
My [livejournal.com profile] xover_exchange fic isn't going well.  It's not flowing; I'll have it done on time, but I'm having to force it.  This is frustrating, as it means it's not going to be as good as it could be, and particularly as I don't want to let my recipient down.
beatrice_otter: Plot Bunny Princess (Plot Bunny Princess)
This bunny is kind of vague, but it intrigues me:

The ghost of Hamlet's father is some kind of non-corporeal alien that feeds off of negative emotions, trying to manipulate events in Denmark to make itself a banquet.  The Doctor is there to investigate, and in the process of saving the day manages to both save Ophelia from going crazy due to the alien's influences, and cut through Hamlet's grief-and-rage-fuelled egotistical funk.  The Doctor and Horatio get along quite well, saving the day together while Hamlet's off soliloquizing.
