Fic: The Price of a Favor

My last and quickest-written Yuletide fic, another treat. And the one that got far and away the most comments! I guess people really love Timov.

Title: The Price of a Favor
Fandom: Babylon 5
Word Count: 1922 words
Written For: amatara
Summary: All Timov wants to do is live quietly. With Cartagia on the throne, that may not be an option.

( When rumors began to spread about Cartagia's madness, Timov discounted them. )

comments

Fic: In Which Daystar Learns Magic and Asks A Question

My second Yuletide fic of the year, this is the first Enchanted Forrest fic I've ever written. I wrote it as a treat a day or so before the deadline; I had to re-read the last Enchanted Forrest book, but that was no hardship ;)

Title: In Which Daystar Learns Magic and Asks A Question
Fandom: Enchanted Forrest Chronicles
Word Count: 1891 words
Written For: silencedancer
Summary: A little vignette set immediately post-Talking To Dragons

( The castle was large, and impressive, and didn't feel at all like home. By the time he'd been lost five times (which only took until noon, the day after the battle), Daystar would have liked very much to go back to the cabin he was raised in. )

comments

Fic: Learning Curve

The first Yuletide fic I wrote was for shobogan, who wanted Dana and Max learning to be superheros from Barbara Gordon.

Title: Learning Curve
Fandom: Batman Beyond
Word Count: 6,431
Written For: shobogan
Beta: sinesofinsanity
AN: I couldn't figure out how to fit Damien in to a canon where Bruce and "Talia" interact and neither mentions or even hints about him. So in this continuity, there are only four Robins.
Summary: Dana knows who she is. What she doesn't know is who she's going to be.

( Dana stared at the costumes in the cases, coat wrapped firmly around her. )

comments

Fanfic meme, ganked from kazbaby

Tell us the name of a favorite story you have written, and why is it your favorite.

Going through my fic, this was a really tough one to decide. I eventually had to pick two.

Overall, I would say To The Lord I Will Sing (Tanakh, Miriam and Deborah) and The Storyteller (Big Fish, Jenny Beamen Hill) are my two favorites.

The Song of Miriam and the Song of Deborah have fascinated me since I first studied them. They are, between them, two of the oldest fragments of text in the Tanakh (aka the Hebrew Bible or the Old Testament). As patriarchal as the Bible can be, that's quite amazing. They also bear some superficial similarities, enough that some scholars claim they're actually two versions of what was originally the same song. I don't know about that, but Miriam is the only female prophet in the Tanakh and Deborah is the only female judge, and they were both awesome in their different ways. This story allowed me to play with the Biblical text, highlighting the similarities and differences between them, and the interplay of language. It also let me do interesting things with structure. I had so much fun writing it.

The Storyteller was a Yuletide fic, and an attempt to work through the theme of Big Fish (an excellent movie, you should all see it if you haven't) from a feminist perspective. The story is all about the unreliable narrator, as Will explores the fantastical stories his father told him as a child. But what I didn't understand until I wrote this story is that Will himself is an unreliable narrator. Making Jenny the main character of my story gave me a chance to explore the truth behind the stories, and the reasons people tell the stories they do, all while having fun with the lush world of the south shown in the movie.

comments

PSA: Distances in America

To all writers, both professional and fannish: America is a big place, and yet some of the important places (though not all) are relatively close together. Sometimes you have to fly to get places in a day. But not always. Sometimes, it is quicker to drive. When your characters are traveling somewhere in America, somewhere you have never been, please do some elementary research to figure out whether it would make more sense for your characters to fly or drive. There's this newfangled thing called Google Maps that can help. It is your friend. Use it.

I have seen so many goofs about stuff like that, it's not even funny. From pros and amateurs.

Like the ep of SG-1 where we meet Sam's new boyfriend Pete, a cop from Denver in Colorado Springs on a case, who says he flew there. It's only like an hour or two away by car.

Like the NCIS/SG-1 crossover where Gibbs et al took a helicopter to the SGC headquarters. From the Navy Yard. Now, the Navy Yard is in DC. The SGC is in Colorado Springs, which is over half a continent away. That's some helicopter. A commercial jet would have been a lot quicker.

Like the NCIS fic I just read where Gibbs' dad flew down to DC instead of driving. Stillwater's about 3.5/4 hours north of DC, and it's an hour away from the nearest airport (Scranton/Wilkes Barre); by the time you drove to the airport, got checked in, got through security, waited for the plane, flew down, got off the plane and through the airport, and then through DC traffic, it would probably be about that fast to just drive, and it would be a lot less hassle.

This is not rocket science, folks. It takes five minutes to figure out.

comments

Pride and Prejudice takes place 1811-1812. Therefore, I’m trying to avoid war events, as I have no clue what’s going to happen next. (The real-world timeline isn’t exactly a help.)
